My digital drawing entry for contest kindly hosted @xpilar Thanks for a challenging but enjoyable project :)

The Winged Creatures of Ancient Island

Step 1

I erased a part of the background to form the island and cloud shape.

Step 2

I filled in the water area around the island with fine spatter brush, for a tropical look.

Added the palm trees.

Created the winged creature from two shell shapes and added wings.

Step 3

Inverted the art and also added lights in the sky plus boosted the colours.

Below is my own collage that I used as a background for the theme.

Lastly changed the colors to what you see at top of page. Also embossed the image slightly.

The Winged Creatures of Ancient Island

Motionless and daunting
Stood the island in the sea of old
Countless tales of winged creatures
among the pirates
were told

An island where the palm trees grew lush
a place forgotten in the sands of time
just the rush of the waves on the ragged rocks
black and sharp warding off strangers who dared to cross

Creatures with wings danced in the moonlight
Their shimmering scales awash with water and sand
A place they called their home
Where they liked to roam

An old volcano is where they went
in the middle of the island
to sleep till the sun rose out of the deep
Beckoning the creatures back to the shore
where they ate their fill of molluscs and krill.

Dare not venture to this island of old
For you will not be welcomed
so the pirates were told.
