Friendships can be very fickle and easily washed away like the sand on a beach and it can be also be as sturdy as an oak.

The first human relationships we are introduced to is that of family. When we are born, we develop a relationship with our parents. They care for us, simply because they love us, then we develop relationships with our siblings, and we care for them because our parents teach us to. As we grow older, we begin to make friends. These friendships can be formed based on various reasons, they can be formed because they are mutually beneficial, sometimes because one party benefits certain things from the other party and sometimes, it’s because there is mutual trust, love and respect for each other.

The above reasons listed are just a few of many reasons why friendships are formed, but the most sturdy of friendships are the ones formed out of mutual trust, love and respect for each other. I am sure you would wonder: “How do we know friendships that are borne out of this reason?”. It’s really simple, these friends would show up in your time of need. Hence the saying “a friend in need is a friend indeed”, however this doesn’t mean we should capitalize on their goodwill towards us and make it a habit of always being in need of something, because when this happens, friendship becomes parasitic and it would most like fade away.

Friendships requires effort from both parties for it to be sturdy. It requires that both parties respect each other and show up for each other in time of need, it also requires patience and forgiveness. Only then can Friendship stand the test of time.
