Is the Game Over?

in hive-185836 •  7 months ago

Preferences and priorities in life keep changing all the time. It's crazy to think what matters the most to us right in this moment, may become a distant memory in the future. Such is life and time, ever-evolving and constantly changing.

I'm not a philosopher, just stating a fact that I only realized after experience. I'm no Socrates who could whip up some high-level philosophy on a mere whim.

Rather, I jumped on this train of thought while watching my child playing Minecraft. He's crazy about this game. This is not the only one, he has a list.

I was thinking, would it matter to him after a few years or he'll find no pleasure in it? Maybe he would still be a gaming guy, but might move on to newer games.

I'm not ignoring the fact that humans can get bored. I'm talking about a scenario in which one is not bored but rather drifts away to other things with life, unconsciously. Years later, when you get nostalgic and try to relive the memories, you are shocked to find out that you no longer feel the same pleasure as recorded in your brain/memories.

That sweet memory is now tarnished.

Perhaps, I chose a stronger word, but certainly something turns off inside you. Initially, I thought it was the memory that ruins, but I realized that memories stay sweet forever - you only (finally and truly) come to terms with the change in your preferences.

Duh! I do feel like Socrates now. I didn't mean to but I guess my half sleepy head is doing it for me.

Interestingly, I caught another train while watching Minecraft. I was mentally teleported to my childhood, thinking about games that I loved playing back then. At that time, we used to play physical or board games more but this trend of digital games was also emerging while we were growing up.

I was going to write about my favourite digital or PC games in the 90s and early 2000s. Instead, I got lost in complex thoughts. If you are not feeling bored, I will do a quick round-up of 5 games that I can recall at the moment because I don't want to procrastinate it to another post.

Driver 2
It's not my favourite but it's the first ever digital game I played so it deserves to be on the list, right? Was I eight?

I can recall a car racing track in the forest, made of all kinds of greens around and dirt underneath, moving up and down the flora. The second your vehicle skids, a huge frog awaits, with its sticky tongue outside, ready to devour you the whole.

Need for Speed 2
There are countless versions of this infamous car racing game but I always kept coming back to this one. It was clean and simple.

My love for a Red Ferrari was born with this game. Sometimes, I used to switch to a Black Jaguar, but the control, speed and smoothness of that Ferrari had no match.

It was like a therapy, racing around those smooth urban roads. What therapy an 8 year old could possibly need? But I hope you are getting what I'm implying.

Mortal Kombat 4
Never been a fan of Street Fighter. Mortal Kombat version 4 was the fighting game made for me. It was the Fatalities, advanced killing maneuvers that required hitting a foot-long combination of keys simultaneously, that got me hooked to this game. It was the only thing I was better at than my little brother.

I mostly chose Radien for tough matches and loved summoning that killer thunderstorm by viciously hitting around 10 keys in a single heartbeat.

Hercules
If you are an old reader, you should probably know, I'm into Fiction that includes a love for mythological characters. What better place to find out a ton of such characters than in one game of Hercules - Hydra, Medusa, Cyclops, Centaur, Minotaur, and many more?

1000046103.jpg

Metal Slug
I used to have cool-kid feels while playing this game. It was not 3D either but the constant need to shoot, kill, and survive was so thrilling and the heavy machine guns and a swarm of enemies didn't allow me to blink an eye.

While I played these simpler games for years, with time my sibling left my league and got crazy about GTA Vice City, Prince of Persia, Devil May Cry, Call of Duty, Counter Strike and the likes of it.

It turned out, I didn't have interest in high simulations. Perhaps, I didn't have good control on three dimensional moves and got into the comfort of up, down, right, left, and a - s - d for powers and maneuvers.

My brother still plays advanced games on a PS, so does his wife. Here I am, years later, wanting to relive the memory of using a thunderstorm fatality of Radien, killing those deadly locks of Medusa, and having a breezy Ferrari ride.

I will be obliged, if anyone can share tried and tested MAC compatible download links for any of these games. The woman wants to play and find out what excites her and what doesn't. Are these games really over for her or she's over these, 20 years later?

P.S. Where do we post gaming stuff?

P.P.S. I no longer have these games and I couldn't find free images on the Internet. So, I had to prompt AI to generate images based on my memory and of course the online database.

I wasn't going to comment at first because I don't have much experience with video games. When I was a kid, there were these handheld game consoles that only people whose parents were allowed to go abroad (during the communist regime) could buy. I also remember being left to play Pac-Man on my mother's office computer when she took me with her to her workplace. But generally back then we didn't have much access to computers and there was no way to form any habit, interest or passion in me.
Rather, I wanted to say something about the first part of the post. Yes, I think the things we used to love change with time because life is a never-ending ever-changing and absolutely unpredictable flow. However, in the last few days I did an experiment and started practicing again something I did last time, let's say 4 years ago. Well, I think the feeling was the same. And I found that the favorite things and activities that were formed in the last, for example, 13 years of my life, have not changed for the time being. But that's maybe because I'm an adult person. From one age to another, things change easily and quickly - from childhood to adolescence and from adolescence to adulthood.
On the other hand, the other thing that I have noticed is that the things that worry me change in a few (less) years, i.e. problems and worries are somehow shorter-lived and easily changeable. They are different from hobbies and passions in this regard. And thank God 😌

I am happy that you popped in despite your lack of experience (or interest?) in video games.

Well, one of my uncles used to live abroad. Whenever he visited us, he used to bring something interesting like those Nintendo hand-held consoles and the ones with cassettes that could be plugged into the TV. It was fun. And then came computers which changed the whole gaming world with CDs, DVDs, and then online games.

I have played Pac-Man a lot.

I might be giving the impression of having a childhood where I played games the whole day. But it wasn't like that. We had a computer at home but we (me and my siblings) were allowed only 30 minutes each in a day. We used to wait for those 30 minutes for the whole day. 😄

You must have felt elated having found the same feelings back. I wish I could have that too.

You are right - childhood, adulthood, and old age are three main phases of life. Everything changes when we move from one phase to another. Not just hobbies.

And yes sorrows never last. I believe it's in human nature to want to be healed, happy, and at peace.

It's human nature to get bored of stuff and people in some time. But, I view it from a slight different perspective. I don't think a person gets bored from a hobby or a person over time because they want something new, well it's not always the case but boredom and stability are directly proportional. When you're comfortable around or with something, you'll get bored of it in time. If we specifically talk about games or activities, I started playing fifa back in 2013. The first fifa I played was Fifa 14 on my playstation 3. It's been 11 years and I still play the game. Infact, every Saturday night is my boys night out and we play fifa till the sun rises. I wonder, now, why didn't I get bored of Fifa?

Thank youuu for reminding me of Metal slug. I had been trying SO HARD to remember this game and now all the nostalgic memories kicked back in. I remember us being absolutely addicted to this game.

Where do we post gaming stuff?

Good question. This post gave me an idea to spam post my games here weekly. Currently I'm playing God of War.

Ps: have you played the Jungle book game? It launched on PC in the early 2000s

My focus was on why we stop doing certain things. I think there can be multiple reasons for that differing from person to person depending on their circumstances. Some get bored either because they find better things to do or simply because there's nothing new. But sometimes life gets in the way and you stop doing certain things but you would love to be able to do those again.

I have played a soccer game like this👇. I'm too old. 😄

I don't play games anymore. But fighting the urge to download those old games.

This post gave me an idea to spam post my games here weekly.

You're welcome. 😛

If you are talking about this👇 Jungle Book then yes.

YESS. There was this mission in which we had to get inside the cave and fight snakes idr properly. Also have you played online games on friv or stickcricket?

No... I think I never played online.

Multi-player online games are another thing.

One of the best multiplayer online games was street fighter

I have played but I liked Mortal Kombat more.

Thank you. I don't mind. (:

Thank you! :)

I'm not much of a gamer or video game person myself. Would you believe—actually, you probably will, since you know me quite well—that I preferred watching my brother play rather than playing myself? I think I’ve mentioned this before.

However, one game that I used to play religiously and maybe even mastered was the "Brick Game." Okay, it’s not a video game, but it’s still a game. I used to play it day in and day out, so much so that my family got irritated by the constant "toom-toon" and "beep-beep" sounds. But yes, I played it like a pro. I don't see those brick games anymore. Do you have any idea where I can find them? I saw some versions here, but they are of very poor quality and have such small screens.

Anyways, where does your son play Minecraft? My son has a tablet... Will it support Minecraft? It's a paid game, and my son says that the true (high quality) version isn't supported by tablets.

Yes, I think I know you weren't into gaming.

Are you talking about this?

1000046602.jpg

Maybe you can find it on Daraz...I used to turn off the volume while playing games. Never liked the sounds.

He plays on his tablet. I just asked him which Minecraft are you playing. He said it's a dummy verison, you refused to pay for the original... 😅

He said it's a dummy verison, you refused to pay for the original... 😅

The dummy version is the only version that can run on their tablets!

I will say the digital world keeps evolving when it actually comes to that one..there are some games that we usually play before that we no longer play again because they have evolved

I think it's just me then who finds it hard to adapt to the change.
