I think it's the same situation all over the world, here in Italy it's the same, if you call somebody to do a job, they either don't show up or do terrible work, and then ask for an incredible sum of money.
In the end, me and my brother decided to renovate our apartment by ourselves, except for plumbing and electrical grid.

That is unbelievable, I can not imagine how someone can call himself specialist and also they earn about £80 per hour, my hourly rate as a Surgeon is only £40, there is definitely something wrong in how it works.
I try to reassure me saying important is that water runs through the pipes now.
When you tell the workers do not show up, it is also familiar for us, when we made arrangements with chimney men, he agreed to come and never attended but also we were not able to get him anymore on phone. Very frustrating.
I can imagine that you and your brother decided to do yourselves and that is great because two of you at least.
We have soon some more work when we are back to Germany in summer but we will do ourselves there it is not so high house.

I think it's also because everyone is going to University these days, to get a college degree, so nobody does these manual jobs, that are indeed very requested, so they can charge ridiculous prices.
