The Meghna River is one of the largest rivers in Bangladesh. The Meghna River sustains an important multi-species commercial fishery in the country. Generally, a large number of fishing crafts and gears are operated in the Meghna River estuary for commercial exploitation of the fish resources. A present study was conducted to know the types of fishing gears and their working mode in the Meghna River estuary of the country.

A survey of the country was designed to collect information on the type of gear, the process of operation, the cost and manpower required for operation, the season of operation and the main species of fish. A survey showed that commercial river fishing has been operating in the study area for a long time, throughout the year, with different types of fishing gear.

Here, some gears were selective for a particular species, whereas others were responsible for several species caught during the operation, giving the nature of the fishing species different. Still, a number of fishing gears in the Meghna River were found to catch fish regardless of their size or species.

During floods, the habitat of the species was destroyed, thus causing multiple losses to the biodiversity of the Meghna estuary. At that time, fishermen fished in the Meghna River in violation of the law. This causes small fish to become extinct from the start and creates problems with fish near humans.

Then the administration department asked to create awareness about the long-term effects of different fishing gears in the Meghna River. The administration department informed that an awareness or training program should be conducted for fishermen to provide knowledge about fishing laws. In this way, the fish and fishery products of the Meghna River become useful for millions of poor people in Bangladesh.

But the fishermen are getting good profits every day due to the large amount of hilsa caught in the Meghna River. The faces of thousands of fishermen in the Meghna River are always filled with satisfaction. Now they are spending their time happily again. But along with the traders, the fishermen are busy unloading delicious fish from the boats and supplying it to various wholesale markets of the country day and night.

Traders said that the price of large fish is lower this year compared to last year due to the abundance of fish available in various markets across the country. Fish is easily available at various times, including in Majuchoudhurihat in various upazilas of the country, and Matirhat and Batirhat in Kamalnagar upazila.The government administration is currently providing various fishing facilities to fishermen in compliance with government laws.
