I wanted to tell you about the Central Recreation Park of St. Petersburg - a place loved by thousands of citizens, but I didn't know where to start... I spent several hours in the park, photographed everything that I considered necessary to show, after which I realized that the publication would be too big. Almost as big as Elagin Island, on which the park is located)) I was thinking this way and that: maybe I should publish one photo for each object? But each of these objects deserves more... In the end, I decided to start with the oldest-with what this park was a few centuries ago. It's only now that everyone can enter here, and once there was a summer residence of the Russian tsars (once this place was located outside the city). So let's talk about the summer royal palace!

Initially, the entire island and the villa on it belonged to the Russian statesman Ivan Elagin (the island and the palace are still called after him). It is not known who built the villa for him. But the current appearance of the Elagin Palace is due to the brilliant Italian architect Carlo Rossi. At the beginning of the XIX century, the Russian tsar Alexander I bought the entire island for his mother, and commissioned Rossi to completely rebuild the villa of Elagin.

The architect built several buildings on the island at once: in addition to the three-story palace crowned with a dome, three additional pavilions were built there, as well as a Kitchen and Stable buildings.

On the land side, the Elagin Palace is guarded by lions.

This is the first pair of lions cast in cast iron in St. Petersburg. They were created in 1822 at the St. Petersburg state Foundry.

Cast-iron statues of lions were made from April to June 1822, and in July they were installed in front of the palace.

And from the river side, from where the danger was apparently not expected)), four huge vases made of white marble, decorated with bas-reliefs, are installed.

Simultaneously with the construction of the palace, an Oil Meadow was built next to it, where, under the reign of Nicholas I, the birthday of Empress Alexandra Feodorovna was celebrated every year on July 1. People gathered in the meadow, a parade was held here, fireworks were arranged, and everyone who came was served a free treat. The meadow still exists, but it is strictly forbidden to walk on it.In the photo, a meadow, a palace and one of the pavilions built by Carlo Rossi.
