Bracing for Vietnam's Rainy Season in Central Vietnam

Hi Friends,

The rainy season is ramping up here in central Vietnam. This last weeknd we had our first tropical storms and depression passing through, dumping heavy rainfall in short periods of time. Yesterday, a major downpour struck Da Nang and the nearby town of Hoi An, leading to flooded streets and power outages. As we move into peak monsoon season, which lasts from October/ November ish through January /Febuary ish, I'm preparing for a deluge.

Flooding so quick

These summer monsoonal rains are no joke in central Vietnam. During a typical rainy season, this region can receive BUCKETS rainfall on average. Frequent thunderstorms roll in off the South China Sea, unleashing intense downpours. Rivers and lakes overflow, and the normally scenic beaches and rice paddies transform into muddy wetlands. Minor flooding occurs regularly on roads and in neighborhoods when the storm drains overflow.

Sure sure... I will agree that while the rains nourish the brilliant green rice fields and jungle hills, they also wreak havoc on infrastructure. Last rainy season, several major roadways in Danang were completely washed out by powerful storms. Repairing the damage took months and isolated many rural towns. Power outages from downed lines are also common when heavy winds and rain hit. I'm really hoping we don't see any more severe storms like the damaging cyclone last year.

Preparing for monsoon season here means having the right gear and supplies. I think I will be ordering some high-quality rain jackets and waterproof boots from the old Lazad (Vietnam's Amazon of sorts).

I've learned it's best to avoid being out on the roads when an intense storm hits. The other day in Hoi An, I got caught out just as the skies unleashed a deluge. Within minutes, the streets were Flooded up to my knees! Next time, I'll wait out the worst of the storm before venturing out.

While the rains can make getting around a challenge, there are upsides too. The greenery and blooming rice paddies are beautiful this time of year. With fewer tourists around, attractions are less crowded...but who wants to sit on a beach in the rain? Stormy days are perfect for cozying up in a café or scheduling time for indoor activities and writing posts and more. hahahaha.

Are you experiencing rainy season where you live? I'd love to hear how you deal with a lot of rainfall and storms. No matter what the weather throws at us this summer and fall here in Vietnam, I'm planning to make the most of it and take in all the natural beauty. A little water never hurt anyone, right?

Stay dry and safe during the wet months ahead!
