"The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed not just the body, but the soul." - Alfred Austin

I have a very definite pull to my garden lately. Not that I have not always been very passionate about it… but there has definitely been a huge shift within lately. There is just something magical about spending time in a garden - and I don’t mean just sitting there soaking it all up, though that is also great soul food.

No, I am referring to spending time working in the garden. Sure it is gruelling - I mean who needs gym or a workout when you can just go do a little gardening. Most of the time when I am finished working in the garden for the day, I have discovered muscles in my body that I did not know existed… and the following day, even walking can prove challenging, lol.

But having said all of that - the reward of those efforts, not just from a physical perspective… but an emotional and mental one are absolutely priceless.

I am finding more and more these days that people mostly just leave me feeling empty or low. It is a little bit soul destroying to be honest because it saddens me when I walk around feeling the way I often do.

But then I go out into the garden and even if it begins with heavy feet and an almost loathsome soul, all of that disappears in a matter of minutes as my focus shifts to whatever I am cutting, digging or planting.

I don’t know if it is the physical activity, being out in the elements, being removed from my inner ramble or a combination of all three, but it definitely calms me, centres me and reminds me that no matter how I may be feeling or what is going on in my life and the world around me - there is always something which can bring light and happiness into my heart.

At the end of the day when I am finished doing whatever I was doing in the garden - my emotions are always lighter and there is that sense of satisfaction and achievement which comes along with it too - not to mention the excitement for the growth to come with whatever you may have planted.

My mom, as many of you already know was a complete green fingers and she spent most of her days out in a garden - whether it was hers or someone else’s. Like it was her vice - her escape, her solace.

As time moves forward, I am discovering more and more why she sought to spend so many hours out there with her hands and knees covered in soil and I too finding that love within myself, because when everything else in the world feels cold and cruel, I am always able to find love in my garden.

Soil between your fingers is satisfying, as well as what grows in it. Controlling it and giving up control. And of course you find a lot of satisfaction in a good glass of red wine ;-)))
