I am a big fan of Spider-Man. Growing up he was one of my favorite superheroes mainly because I liked to rock climb. Impress your friends and family with this Spiderman cake.
A Spiderman cake is perfect for birthday parties or superhero themed parties or a “just because” cake. And it is a great cake to get started with fondant decorating. Haven’t used fondant much before? Don’t worry! This cake is super easy to decorate. If I can do it, you can do it. Let’s get started!
Ingredients
- 1 Cake Mix any flavor or make it from scratch, and associated ingredients
- Frosting any flavor
- Red Fondant 24 oz
- Black Fondant 4 oz
- White Fondant 4 oz
- Water
Instructions
Bake your choice of cake in a 10-inch round pan or large rectangle pan. Use a cake mix or homemade recipe. Allow the cake to cool completely.
Place the cake on a round or rectangle cake board. Cover the cake board with aluminum foil first if you like. If the cake split on the top trim it down a little bit with a knife.
Print off a Spiderman Face from online. This will be your template. It should fill up a 8.5/11 standard sheet of paper. Using scissors cut out the face. Place the face on top of the cake and cut around it with the knife. Save those cut cake pieces and eat them or make cake pops with them.
Now, trim and shape the cake so it is a bit more rounded like a face.
Frost the cake with your favorite frosting. Use a store-bought or homemade frosting.
Take a big piece of red fondant and knead it in your hands until soft, then roll it out until it is about 1/8th of an inch thick. Set the fondant on top of the cake and use your hands and a fondant tool to smooth it out. Now just cut around the cake at the base with the knife removing the excess fondant.
Roll out black and white fondant. Cut the full eyes out of the template. Place the eyes on the black fondant and cut out those eye shapes. Then trim just the white part of the eye with the scissors. Set that trimmed part on the white fondant and cut those out. You will be left with 2 bigger black eyes, and 2 smaller white eyes. Place one white eye on top of one black eye. Use a tiny bit of water as needed to act as glue.
Put the template with the eyes cut out back on top of the cake. This will allow you to see where you should put your fondant eyes on. Again use a bit of water as glue and set the eyes in place.
Take more black fondant and roll out several long strings of it. This will be used as the webbing. Looking at the template as a guide place the fondant webbing on the face. Again using a thin brush and water as glue. Once done you will have a finished Spiderman cake. Enjoy!
