It turned out well too!
Back in late 2023, I had just picked up the new skill of net-making. I wanted to continue to gain reasonable and useful skillsets as I continued to age. Shortly after that, I was helping a friend who enjoyed woodcarving along with his sons. While there I started trying something else new, actually woodcarving something useful.

I started off simple, with just a pair of chop-sticks. They were immediately used to eat with, and proved their function. Having built some confidence, I decided to attempt to craft a trickier utensil, a wooden spoon. First, I needed a good piece of wood, so I chose a chunk of black walnut and began to roughly shape it out.

From there it was just some careful dedication. One very interesting thing that happened was my friend's oldest son asking me, "Do you know what a spoon looks like?" Now, I'm not sure what would prompt him to ask a forty-something year old man a question like that, but I honestly don't think it was anything I was doing. I basically went straight from chunk of wood to spoon as quickly and carefully as I could.

The final result was worth the effort too. I was seriously pleased with how it turned out. It did end up with the slightest overall bend to it, so I call it a "right-handed" spoon. When I returned home with it and showed "Mama-Pepper" she said it looked like "a good spoon for beans." That said, I present the following in-progress photos for your viewing pleasure.
