Edges are the way an area or a surface ends.
While there are several types of edges, paying attention to hard and soft edges is critical for realistic drawing.
Hard objects have hard edges.
Soft objects, and cast shadows (in most cases) have soft edges.
When drawing landscape, the close objects are sharp and in focus.
The background objects are blurry, with soft edges.
This happens due to atmospheric perspective, meaning the effect of the atmosphere (air) on far away objects.
Particles in the atmosphere scatter light, so the more distant an object is from the observer, the more powerful the effect of scattering is.
For the observer, a far away object looks with fewer details, less contrast, and it has soft edges.
