Torus - Ran Art Blog

Torus is a complex shape to draw.

Many objects share this shape, which is round yet has overlapping areas.

These tips are based on my guide for complex shapes drawing.

The torus has a round (ellipse) contour line. The inner part looks like an eye.

This is due to overlapping. The inner part of the torus is partially blocked by the front part of the torus.

When rendered with brightness values, it looks like a doughnut.

Shapes like rings, driving wheels, bracelets and stair railing share the torus characteristics.

I like rendering my drawings realistically.

If you are new to realism, read my guide on how to draw realism.

Remember that while the object has hard edges, the cast shadow has soft edges.

Here is the paper clip with hard edges for its cast shadow (1) and after I soften the edges (2):

I used both a synthetic brush (1) and a blending stump (2).

I prefer small straight brushes, they are accurate.

Thanks for explaining 👍

@ wakeupkitty

Thank you very much.
I'll try to add steps in future posts.
Sometimes I just draw without taking photos of steps.
