Disgusting! Smelly! What's the world coming to! Those unkempt, liberal, free love young people with their dreadlocks are ruining the world! Imagine, they want drugs legalized and the war in Vietnam stopped. Damn communists.
In the 1960s and 1970s, a new breed of young people took center stage around the world, especially at university campuses. They advocated for weird things, like an end to wars and green energy and peace. Somehow they got the name hippies.
Their top dogs could somehow afford the iconic VW Combi, often a beaten up one with flowers painted all over it. Then they would go off in groups to music festivals and into the woods and everywhere they could fornicate and smoke plants and not bath for a week or two.
What happened to those young people?
Well, many ended up in the very wars they protested against. Or they took the very corporate jobs they despised. Some became drug addicts, some landed in jail.
But for the most part, they became our very responsible parents.
Today, their iconic VW Bayview (?) Combi is becoming rare, and with a hefty price tag when you can find one. I've seen some that cost more than a brand new Mercedes-Benz. Many of the hippies of the flower period are grandparents today with free time on their hands. So they are spending some of the fortunes they gathered by peddling oil or cheating their fellow man as banker, to buy old run-down VW's and restoring these vehicles in a bout of nostalgia. Some gets revenge on the uncomfortable vans of yesteryear by converting their barn finds into camper vans. Only to realize they'll never have their good young times over again.
Their longing to the good old days thus get passed on to their grandkids about to set off for university, in the form of gifts like this Combi. A responsible grandkid then gets to continue the tradition of defiling a young university girl in the back. Or on the roof.
