1820s: The first known lighter is invented by German chemist Johann Wolfgang Döbereiner. The "Döbereiner's lamp" uses hydrogen gas as a fuel source and is not very practical, as the gas must be manually pumped into the lighter and the lighter is prone to explosions.
Late 1800s: Austrian chemist Carl Auer von Welsbach invents the first practical lighter, called the "Austrian lighter." This lighter uses a flint and steel wheel to create a spark, which ignites a wick soaked in a flammable liquid.
Early 1900s: Lighters become more popular as the use of tobacco and cigarettes increases. Many different designs and styles of lighters are developed during this time, including lighters that use kerosene, gasoline, and other flammable liquids as fuel.
1960s: The first disposable lighters are invented. These lighters use a small, pressurized container of butane gas as a fuel source and are inexpensive and convenient to use.
Today: Lighters continue to evolve and there are now many different types available, including electronic lighters that use a battery to create a spark, as well as lighters that use alternative fuel sources such as solar power. Lighters are used for a variety of purposes, including lighting cigarettes, candles, and fireplaces, and are often collected as novelty items.
