Hello Steemians!
Today is Thursday, 27th of August 2020 and we experience very hot weather from few days. It is just about a week without having rain but due to high sunshine, everything that engage with direct sunrays, has been dried up.
Though I add water to the plants continuously, it was not enough. It was sad to see them like this. I waited, hoping a rain soon but it did not happen. So, I decided to move pots to a shelter.
I do not like this work as it always causes to a back pain. But it was hard to bear. So, I moved them.
After that I added extra little water than usual amount. I poured water all over the plant and into the pot.
Adding some coir pith and charcoal also can be effective as they can accumulate water and avoid evaporation of water from the pot.
Coir pith is something that comes after grinding coconut husk. There is a place that we take coir pith near my father’s parents’ home. We usually bring one or two bags of coir pith at once.
Charcoal is what remains after half burning of wood in the hearth. Still we have a firewood hearth in our home. We called it Dara lipa in Sinhala. Anguru or charcoal in English has a great ability to trap moisture inside them. So, as I said, it helps to keep water in the soil.
Covering plant roots with some coconut husk pieces or some piduru called rice straw in English, also effective in moisture protection in the plant and pot.
These are what we usually find in Sri Lanka as cheap and effective moisture protectors. Other than this, you may find many more in your countries. I also like to know what they are.
I did not have much time to do all of them in the today’s evening. I will add them tomorrow for sure.
