Happy Halloween
My favorite holiday is finally here! It's a gorgeous fall day here in Philadelphia (USA) and while the Phillies are on all of our minds, today we get a break from baseball and the World Series for some spooky fun! Trick-or-treaters will come later but for now, I still have a ton of time for art creation (fun) and website work (not-so-fun).
Pyrography Art: The Joker
This piece was done as a commission for a family who wanted to surprise their daughter, who clearly loved the joker. Before talking to me, they had gotten a number of pictures she might want made into art, varying in complexity because they didn't know what would be doable. While the most expensive, I was able to recreate this picture from an unknown artist as a wood-burned piece of wall art. The family, to preserve some element of surprise lied and told their daughter it would be one of the simpler, less complex images I had to choose from. Boy, she must have been surprised when she opened her gift!
As always, I start with tracing a handmade stencil to transfer the image to wood, then set out to trace that image with my burning pens. This is a slice of natural wood with live bark edges.
Because tracing lines gets boring, I often trace a focal feature and then work on the shading and details locally before carrying on to the other parts of the picture. This way, my focus goes immediately to the important, eye-popping portions of the particular piece and let the other aspects of the art fall in line from there.
Here I even started blackening the background with a blowtorch before moving on. This was very tricky and requires using the regular burning pens around details such as the hair so they aren't ruined by the torch.
Once the focal point, his face in this piece, is complete, I move on and finish the rest of the burn. Then, I will add color before applying all the necessary sealers to keep the art from scratching and fading so it can be enjoyed for many years to come!
In the end, it was one of my favorite pieces and the Joker's haunting facial features made it a piece of art I know I had to save for Halloween! I hope you enjoyed this special edition!
Be sure to check out my last art post: Dragon. It is one of the most detailed pieces I have showcased yet!

This is fantastic...I can't believe this slipped under my radar and I didn't upvote this.

Hey, it's all good! You're here now! Glad you enjoyed. This was a commission but a personal favorite of mine. I am not great at doing people. Being the Joker made it easier. Faces and hands are the hardest.

Great job, good image.
Working with hair... it's not very fun, I agree, but they are also an important part of the image.
And tell me, if it's not a secret, what kind of wood did you use and what kind of sealants do you use? Is it lucky or something special?

I can use all kinds of wood. Basswood is a nice one and probably the most common. Either pre-sliced from the craft store or possibly wood from small Etsy shops. Bamboo also as most cutting boards I do are bamboo. Pine isn't great because the sap will ruin your image. The wood just needs to be unfinished or sanded to remove any finishes.
Most of the time I use a Poly-acrylic sealer but I also spray seal to lock the colors in (they can smear otherwise when I apply the final sealer) and some pieces I first use epoxy resin to really encase it.

There is softer wood (linden) and harder wood (oak, birch, apple tree). If there was a choice. which fortress would you choose?
And what about the parquet varnish. Or do you mean just by calling it a varnish sealant?

Not sure what you mean by parquet varnish. I know parquet is a wooden floor pattern and varnish is kind of generically used for sealers in general, but never heard of them together, haha.
As for types of wood, I can't say I have a specific preference other than to stay away from "sappy" wood like pine. I just depends what I am going for on that specific piece of art. Soft wood burns easier and I can get better shading, while working with hard wood can get better line detailing but requires higher temperatures to achieve.

Apparently, it's all about the terminology used and the names of different substances.
In Russia, a varnish is a coating based on resins and solvent. The composition includes hardeners. These are mainly chemical compositions. In the sense of clogging the pores of wood, they can be called sealants.
But we have adopted the name sealants for a whole class of substances that are used in construction and plumbing to eliminate cracks, cracks, seams ..
THAT is, varnishes are called substances for surface finishing, and sealants are substances for sealing objects. .
Speaking of sealing your works, you are probably talking about covering them with a protective layer, which in Russia is called varnishing.
I agree, the resin in the wood can spoil the appearance of the pattern when exposed to the temperatures of the burner or spiral.
I understand your answer about the hardness of wood. It all depends on the task. Yes, and you also need to take into account its color and color uniformity.
Thank you for the detailed answers. Good luck to you!
