From Waste to ART, Ocean Sole - Club100

Hi Art Lovers, I watched a news and it affected me a lot. So, I'm going to talk about Ocean Sole social enterprise. I learned that flip-flops are widely used in Kenya. Therefore, these slippers cause a lot of waste. This situation causes pollution problems in Kenya's beaches and waterways. It aims to protect and clean Kenya's beaches and turn flip-flops wastes into art :)

This project is also an employment project. So, how is both cleaning and protection and employment carried out? Julie Church founded Ocean Sole to both clean the beaches and create jobs. With Ocean Sole, people are encouraged to collect flip-flops waste and create new products from these wastes.

This initiative reported recycling more than 500,000 flip-flops last year. More than 1000 Kenyans have benefited from this initiative and it has been a regular source of income for about 100 people in bad economic conditions, which I think is quite successful.

Francis Mutua, the flip flop artist of this initiative, says that art will save the world. Unfortunately, the flip-flops of billions of people around the world find themselves in the oceans. The artist states that the flip-flops arrived off the coast of Kenya with the tides of the Indian Ocean.

Production works as follows. The collected slippers are washed, then some sanding is done to make them smooth. And the products created. Especially animal figures are made and it is said that about 7 animals can be made per day.

This project aims to recycle waste flip-flops and thus save more than 500 trees per year. The project is admirable, especially the fact that approximately 15% of its revenues are transferred to vocational education. This great initiative includes nature conservation, arts, education, employment and production, what more could it be :) All the artists and employees on this team take pride in their work, saying they create beauty. This is a real happiness :)
