We are two different people!

I recently found myself amidst back-to-back 'one-dish' parties with two entirely different groups of people in my community (not the virtual one).

It's a potluck gathering where everyone contributes a dish to share. If the organizer prefers more control, they can assign individuals to bring the salad, dessert, sides, or dishes from main course.

The first one was a welcome baby party, at one of the senior-most lady wife in the lot. (I live in a government facility, hence the tiers and all.)

I think, the significance of this one-dish party is that it's interactive, diverse, and suits various preferences. The menu is varied and is more like a kind of bouffee.

Following are some of the glimpses from this party:

You can hear the chirpy kids in the background. Didn't want to edit it. It was such a happy background:)

And the next day, we had a one-dish barbecue party! Ever heard of it?? Barbecue cuts, chicken boneless malai boti (cream, yoghurt marinated), minced beef seekh kebab, fish, potato wedges, corns, chutneys, salads, naans, cold drinks and two desserts — everything was distributed amongst the invitees. Thankfully, I was not the host again. Took a lot of pressure off me. Though I have hosted these parties at my place.

Unfortunately, I couldn't capture the finished products because by the time everything was ready, we had a massive appetite. Cameras and phones were simply dumped in a corner ;)

There was another grill as well for vegetables and malai boti, but as I said, hunger got the better of us. And I couldn't focus on photographing much.

It was the most yummiest barbecue of my life.

I was thinking about the community's strength in the reflection, the one-dish parties showed me — how teamwork matters. Different opinions and flavors, like a symphony, bring variety to everything!!! You get a mix of each flavour without over exerting yourself.

Ah the word symphony:

noun. /ˈsɪmfəni/ /ˈsɪmfəni/ (plural symphonies) a long, complicated piece of music for a large orchestra, in three or four main parts (called movements) ~ Oxford

Figuratively speaking, it refers to a harmonious combination or arrangement of different elements, often used metaphorically to describe a pleasing blend of diverse components, such as opinions or flavors.

This is the true essence of a community! Be it a virtual or an actual one.

Think about it...

Feelings are mutual. Had a great time at the party with you. (:

My eyes are on the potatoes and cobs of corns.

I like how you related a community's diversity with symphony.

Also, I think if you are exerted physically then it's okay but if it pains you mentally, it's not for you. It's hard for some people to accept different opinions and flavours.

You see it's all about the balance.
If you recall, in the one which both of us attended, we were kind of given dishes (but with a margin of decision) and it worked out perfectly fine. There was no added pressure. Only a slight planning as if what would be convenient for everyone.

The problem arises when there is too much of everything.
And at the same time, there are some people who are always opting for the easy way out. They would do little or no effort at their part to be a constructive part of the party. Hence, a little reminder is necessary sometimes to maintain the least possible quality.

Having said that, I still believe that no one should be forced. It is the collective effort and every one should play their part in a positive way.

Then as Chriddi said, the universe will take care of us:)

Balance, balance is the key my dear!

Else, how would we have had the delight of experiencing your award-winning Banoffee?

Kids went crazy over these... They were perfect

I would have made one for you that day anyways. 😘

something similar is happening in our country ...
we have known each other for quite a long time and if the bath day falls on some holiday, then everyone brings their own snack to the bathhouse. No one is in charge of anything and it always turns out to be fun.

There are no "back-to-back 'one-dish' parties in our culture right now." But sometimes it happens... at least in the bath)))

it always turns out to be fun.

I'm sure it is like that:)

So here's another example:

My father used to say that it's more fun to listen to songs broadcasted through the radio. The element of surprise is there, which is killed by the cassette player. Though we listened on both, he would mention this fact when his favorite song played on the radio out of blue.

So yes, too much planning kills the joy and element of surprise...

The emotional response to something unexpected is always stronger than the reaction to the expected :)

We know these parties/buffet barbecues under the term "bring your own party". When I was very young, we spent a lot of time telling everyone what to bring and writing lists. A waste of time! The universe takes care of us: if you don't take care, nothing is brought twice and everything, everything fits together perfectly! Metaphors metaphorically...

Think about it...

If the organizer prefers more control, they can assign individuals to bring

It is all about control.
And my point: one does not have to tire oneself over these details. There is no harm if one item is brought twice. So what? Still each one will have it's own unique flavour:)

Thinking and rethinking...

P.S.: How do you manage to assess and gauge the core or crux of my presentation every single time???
