The film, which was released on May 12, 2021, made adrenaline tense. For those of you who like survival films, it’s perfect to try watching Oxygen This Sci-Fi film tells the story of a woman trapped in a cryogenic pod. Initially, this woman woke up from sleep and was thought to be being treated. He also thought he was suffering from a disease. He begins to find strange things talking to Milo, an intelligence system that is connected to the pod machine.

Milo himself gave information that there was nothing wrong with this woman’s body. The woman was confused and found out what she meant to be in the pod. Then, he realized that the pod door could not be opened, leaving a limited oxygen capacity. The woman begins to panic when she finds out that oxygen is only able to provide supply for 90 minutes.
For approximately an hour and a half, we will witness the mental rollercoaster of Liz, the protagonist who is trapped in a cryogenic without knowing how he got there. Get ready to feel the sensation of shortness of breath and claustrophobia through this film. “Oxygen” cleverly processed cinematography, sound, and nuance to hypnotize the audience into cryogenic with Liz.

Starting from the first scene, it will be difficult for us to breathe because of the very suspense epilogue. The director with this film cinematographer is also very patient in designing detailed supporting scenes. The process is shown little by little to give tension and a sense of intimacy to the audience. One example is the scene where Liz tries to forcibly break into the cryogenic. There are also some scenes that are quite painful and “gore” without having to show blood and sadism explicitly. Even though it is set in a small and very minimalist background, “Oxygen” is able to explore various shooting techniques. Each cinematographic concept that is executed is also not just a visual variation, but also supports the feelings and emotions to be conveyed through each scene. In terms of scoring, “Oxygen” doesn’t really give you distinctive music like other good sci-fi films. However, this is covered by another good aspect of this film.

As a film that focuses on one protagonist in a very limited setting, “Oxygen” has a main character with very rich characterizations. This ultimately affects the whole story and plot which is full of material from this film. Without knowing the background, we can still see that this woman has a strong personality and character; smart, good at analyzing situations, and stubborn.

Liz becomes a character that feels real where the audience can assume the real background and doesn’t feel “empty”. We can see how Liz analyzes the situation, thinks fast, and looks for solutions instead of spending time panicking. Every conversation with AI named Milo and the actions he takes make us gradually pocket Liz’s character to understand this character.

Melanie Laurent as the main actress also gave her best acting performance. She appears convincingly as a smart woman who we can count on in this story. Liz also had a lot of ups and downs in her moods and thoughts. There are times when he tries to calm down, then re-ignites his brain to think, not to mention the paranoia and frustration in the tightness. This French actress is able to execute every emotion convincingly and invites us to feel the horror she experienced.

With all the new complexities and backgrounds created, Alexandre Aja has found the right formula to make “Oxygen” easy for the audience to understand.

There will be no big question mark that appears after the credit is displayed. As long as we watch the film carefully and focus, it is guaranteed that “Oxygen” is a film that will not drain the brain too much.

The story that is built has many layers that we can peel, with plot twists that overlap each other but are fun to uncover. Our assumptions at the beginning of the story will continue to change until finally we get a new and unexpected ending. The future time background used has also been well presented, there are no irregularities or plot holes.

In the end, “Oxygen” can be a sci-fi genre spectacle that is relaxing enough to fill your spare time. With all the tension and horror that is presented, spending time with Liz who is trapped in cryogenic conditions will be a new exciting experience for us lovers of sci-fi drama films.
