Back in the days when rental was still booming, I regularly went out to get a nice big stack of movies on VHS from my local video store.
I have always been interested in all genres, so I saw virtually everything that came out. This is how I discovered the early Jamie Foxx flick Booty Call (1997), and fell in love with the story of two friends who endure a night of many obstacles while trying to get laid.
It wasn’t until many years later that I realized BC’s premise appears to be – if very loosely – based on Martin Scorsese’s undervalued Crime-Comedy After Hours (1985).
Granted, Griffin Dunne’s character in AH isn’t explicitly out for sex (or is he?) but he is definitely experiencing the night from hell.
Having said that – the similarities could just as well be completely coincidental. Many academics believe there are only seven basic narrative plots, and both BC and AH clearly fall in the category of “The Quest”.
One could even go so far as to say that both films are interpretations of Homer’s The Odyssey… Or am I stretching the associations here?
Either way – another double feature to consider!
