Five years ago, we lost John Singleton.
He will of course forever be the first 24-year-old to receive an Academy Award nomination for best director when he burst on the Hollywood-scene with his impressive debut 𝗕𝗼𝘆𝘇 𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝗼𝗱 (𝟭𝟵𝟵𝟭), but we shouldn’t forget that the writer-director went on to make many more great films.
A lesser-known Singleton pic is the Crime-Drama 𝗕𝗮𝗯𝘆 𝗕𝗼𝘆 (𝟮𝟬𝟬𝟭).
Starring Tyrese Gibson and Snoop Dogg as romantic rivals for the affection of Taraji P. Henson, 𝗕𝗕 would make for a lovely thematic double presentation with 𝗕𝗻𝘁𝗛.
One of the recurring elements of both films is the presence of a strong father figure, with Laurence Fishburne (𝗕𝗻𝘁𝗛) and Ving Rhames (𝗕𝗕) as two completely opposite sides of the same parental coin.
Two solid recommendations for first or repeat viewing!
Seek ‘em out & get your fix.
