Some forty years ago, my lifelong passion for film was ignited with the release of ๐—˜.

Ironically, a film that is designed to make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, basically scared the living daylights out of me. For years I had nightmares about the scene in which the marooned alien, gaunt and pale from homesickness, is left for dead at a riverbank.

Of course, I was only four years old when I first saw ๐—˜.๐—ง. in Amsterdamโ€™s formidable Tuschinski theaterโ€ฆ

Over the four decades and many repeat viewings that followed, I realized that Spielbergโ€™s masterpiece actually is the most important film Iโ€™ve seen and ever will see.

In a nutshell โ€“ the reason ๐—˜.๐—ง. woke an unquenchable thirst for the moving image in me is because it is, in fact, the very first film I ever saw in my life.

And you never forget your first loveโ€ฆ

ET and the candies and wanting to go home.. And that finger... I still wonder what home looks like but also if we would like him if he shows up on our doorstep. ๐Ÿค”

Have a look at @netflixr or join the short film of the week if you like a bit more traffic. @hive-135004

Four years old - it was for longer the minimum age to visit the cinema.
