Some forty years ago, my lifelong passion for film was ignited with the release of ๐.๐ง. ๐ง๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ ๐๐ฟ๐ฎ ๐ง๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฎ๐น.
Ironically, a film that is designed to make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, basically scared the living daylights out of me. For years I had nightmares about the scene in which the marooned alien, gaunt and pale from homesickness, is left for dead at a riverbank.
Of course, I was only four years old when I first saw ๐.๐ง. in Amsterdamโs formidable Tuschinski theaterโฆ
Over the four decades and many repeat viewings that followed, I realized that Spielbergโs masterpiece actually is the most important film Iโve seen and ever will see.
In a nutshell โ the reason ๐.๐ง. woke an unquenchable thirst for the moving image in me is because it is, in fact, the very first film I ever saw in my life.
And you never forget your first loveโฆ
Seek it out & get your fix (again)
ET and the candies and wanting to go home.. And that finger... I still wonder what home looks like but also if we would like him if he shows up on our doorstep. ๐ค
