Two years ago, Netflix released a fresh screen adaptation of the classic anti-war novel ๐—œ๐—บ ๐—ช๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ต๐˜๐˜€ ๐—ก๐—ฒ๐˜‚๐—ฒ๐˜€ (๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฎ), and I was thoroughly impressed. I would even go so far as to say that for me, Edward Bergerโ€™s film is an instant close second to Spielbergโ€™s ๐—ฆ๐—ฎ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฃ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ ๐—ฅ๐˜†๐—ฎ๐—ป (๐Ÿญ๐Ÿต๐Ÿต๐Ÿด) in the overall War genre, and an undisputed number one when it comes to WWI films.

All due respect to the technical marvel that is Sam Mendesโ€™s ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿต๐Ÿญ๐Ÿณ (๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿต) but in terms of narrative cinema I thought that film was a tad monotonous, to be brutally honest. Please donโ€™t get me wrong, I am not saying ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿต๐Ÿญ๐Ÿณ is a bad film โ€“ that is not for me alone to decide โ€“ I am just stating my personal opinion.

What I missed in the US-UK production ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿต๐Ÿญ๐Ÿณ is more than made up for in the first completely German version of ๐—œ๐—ช๐—ป๐—ก. This is first class, epic storytelling โ€“ who says European films cannot rival Hollywood blockbusters? In fact, ๐—œ๐—ช๐—ป๐—ก is quite simply one of the most beautifully shot and compellingly acted films about the horrors of war Iโ€™ve seen in a long while.

Seek it out & get your fix.
