I decided to revisit Outlander because I remembered being completely blown away by this SciFi-Actioner after I had randomly stumbled across it in a DVD clearance-bin some 15 years ago.
I would describe the plot as Pitch Black (2000) meets The Northman (2022) with a dash of Predator (1987) thrown in for good measure. All this is complimented with a stellar cast featuring the likes of Jim Caviezel, Jack Huston, John Hurt and Ron Perlman, plus the best creature design since Hans Ruedi Giger conjured up Necronom IV.
Sounds totally awesome? That’s because it is.
The film was promoted with heavy emphasis on its producer – Barrie M. Osborne, of Lord of the Rings fame – and virtually no mention of director Howard McCain, who nonetheless delivered a standout Space-Monster pic.
Sadly, McCain all but disappeared from the movie-scene, with Outlander listed as his last feature-film directing effort. If anybody here knows what happened to McCain – I’d love to know.
So, does Outlander still hold up after a decade and a half? F*ck yeah! We miss you, Howard!
