To prove I am not just about testosterone-heavy Action films, I wanted to write a couple of kind words about the wonderful Eighties Drama Steel Magnolias. This early Julia Roberts starrer is centered around six Southern Belles from a small Louisiana town going through the motions of life – good and very bad.
SM is just a deliciously rich film – like a warm slice of apple pie. For me, it falls in the same family of films that also includes Once Around (1991) and Terms of Endearment (1983), and features another standout performance by ToE alumnus Shirley MacLaine. Her role in SM is like the female counterpart to Jack Nicholson’s Melvin Udall in As Good as It Gets (1997).
An embarrassment of riches fills out the rest of the cast – Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Olympia Dukakis, Daryl Hannah, Sam Shepard and Tom Skerritt, to name but a few. Add to all this splendor a beautiful score by maestro Georges Delerue, and you have all the ingredients for a truly life-affirming film.
