Been revisiting The Office UK and US lately and although I’ve always admired Ricky Gervais for having the guts to limit the UK original to just two seasons and a special, I have to say that the US version maintains incredible quality throughout all nine years and 188 episodes.
It’s also interesting to see the subtle differences between the personalities of David Brent and Michael Scott. Sure, they are both basically just clueless buffoons, but Scott ultimately evolves into the more redeemable character who occasionally even shows signs of being a pretty good salesman.
Moreover, as the narrative develops throughout the seasons, Scott – in sharp contrast with Brent – does things that indicate he genuinely cares about his employees.
Except Toby, of course…
