It is inspired by the story of a young Nigerian girl who loved pageantry, thrills and glamour. She did win a couple of sashes but it was for the wrong reasons. She thought each sash was a symbol of her beauty and ability to be an enchantress.
She later discovered that there was more to it. And that she could use these platforms to amplify her voice in order to solve recurring problems in her society.
Today, she owns an organisation that trains young girls between 16-30 to be self-reliant. Her foundation equips these female youth with relevant skills like fashion design, photography, hairdressing, etc. for free.
This drawing is pretty simple.
All I needed |
---|
A pencil, A4 paper, eraser and tippex |
---|
Drawing process |
---|
Step 1: Determine the space |
---|
First, I cut the A4 paper in half. The space I need for this piece of art would be pretty small.
Step 2: Sketch the body frame |
---|
Next, I sketched out a round bubbling head.
When it was now time to pay attention to the body, I took care to position the neck and shoulders at the middle of the head.
I would have loved to draw a slimmer model, but this lady is a healthy, chubby beauté, so behold our woman!
Step 3: Adding more details |
---|
African ladies wear Ankara often. These beautiful prints are often sewn into amazing styles. I copied the style of one of my old balloon dresses at home. Now, we have this!
Ankara is usually adorned with beautiful necklaces. So, this model paired hers with a sash, necklace and lovely shoes.
She needed to look like a proper sophisticated model, so I added an umbrella, bracelet (to the left) and book (at the right).
Step 4: Completing the head |
---|
I find the body easier to work on. So I tackled it first before the head. When I was done with the body, I took my time to draw the curls, added bright eyes (including tippex for the white side of the eyes), a cute nose and a lovely smile.
Step 5: Final look |
---|
It took a lot of brainstorming to think of the perfect title for the Queen. "Miss Thrills," "Miss Enlightened," but this was too long. However, it birthed the idea of Miss Informed.
This drawing is dedicated to every woman out there who is bringing about positive change in her little corners. You have my love and admiration. ❤️🤍
