So my Mexican friend picked me up at Cancun at midday and we headed for the hotel I had booked in Tulum.
So even though I still haven't shared my travel disaster story, the long and short is that at the airport the taxi drivers at Cancun airport have a dominance and they do not allow any other companies to serve that area, meaning they can pretty much set any price they want and you have to pay it unless you have the guts to walk out. As a girl travelling there alone that adds an extra safety element, knowing your putting yourself in a lot of risk to get in an unbranded cab or walking around the streets, when you don’t really know where you are and don’t even have internet signal. Other taxi companies if you call them wont come, as they can’t go onto the airport patch. It’s the worst thing about mexico so far to me and it left a really bad taste for the first day. I have budgeted for some nice hotels but not hundreds or thousands of dollars for travelling around.
I did actually expect it to be pretty cheap living here, but so far I find it about the same as London. The supermarket shop I did was £50 for not that many things, I could get the same amount in London. This is resort areas though, I think if you know what your doing you will find ways to do it cheaper. At the airport hotel I was also kind of stuck as the nearest shop was 1 km along a freeway lol so I ended up paying £7 just for three bottles of water. This is something to rly watch out for in mexico. So anyways I somehow manifested a guardian angel here. I had been really worried about how to get to Tulum as the hotel I had booked was kind of out in the middle of nowhere in part jungle land. I really hadn’t accounted for how expensive or difficult public transport was and then this girl stepped in. This is the power sometimes of online friends. We had spoken for a while over social media and been through similar spiritual journeys and she hD offered to get me from the airport but I thought it would be much nicer to meet for coffee first get to know one another etc. But my stress over getting to tulum forced my hand and I thought you know what I can’t keep saying no to the gift the universe keeps trying to send me here so I took her offer to drive me to tulum and in return she can stay here a couple of nights in the hotel till my bf arrives to join me ( I’m super worried how he’s going to get here but at least we have some time to sort that out). P.s she’s now on all the blockchain socials lol so also recruited an extra member her user name is @lauralauze .
It was so nice having someone with me who spoke Spanish and to hang out with. We called in on the way to Puerto Morelos. I was excited I may finally be able to get a vegan ( oat milk) cappuccino. So far the coffee here has been rly bad. We did find a place but their vegan milk is not great and there is 0 froth and the coffee is still not good lol although the cafe is very beautiful. I’m still on a mission to find the perfect coffee here lol! If anyone has any tips let me know.
We found this cute little place though. Insert way too many photos of me drinking coffee but I can never choose !
Puerto Morelos is very cute. I would say you can do most of it in a short space of time it’s basically a beautiful white beach sand, clear sea, lots of cute shops and stalls and a few sweet cafes.
The beach is like paradise:
And we saw this amazing rainbow over the water which, I’m pretty sure is a good sign !
There was a place to go snorkelling which, I do really want to do another day even though I have a little bit of a fear. You can actually hire underwater cameras which would be such an awesome blog entry!
My final whinge about mexico, even though a lot of it is paradise. I was expecting amazing fresh foods here, with it being a tropical island. I found some really cool and interesting things like cactus leaf with chilli but almost everything here is salty and sweet. I never rly use extra salt or sugar and most the packaged food, even the health food like nuts and dried cactus is unbearable for me. Even the tea bags I got tasted salty lol ! I think it’ll be rly easy to do a fruit fast here.
So I love fruit and feel I have tried everything pretty much, but I did find something new whilst here, it’s called ‘tuna’ here I think. They are small yellow fruits and you shokdl pick the very soft ones even if they have bad skin. They taste a little like passion fruit and smell divine.
But anywyas we made it to tulum and I will share the photos of this amazing place later today as I did yesterday’s blog this morning since I was so tired last night I just crashed out. All I did was make this little video with a bit of a recap.
