Imaginarios: "Autorretrato, dudando entre las artes de la música y la pintura", de Angelica Kauffman [ESP / ENG]

En una mañana de 1791, Antoinette estaba desorientada. Por un lado, su tía Laia le explicaba las ventajas de estudiar música; le aseguró que tendría éxito en ese campo dado su habilidad para componer todo tipo de melodías. Por el otro lado, su tía Amandine le decía que tendría mayor éxito en la pintura, pues había visto que la joven dominaba bien las técnicas que su padre le había enseñado en su tiempo libre. La pobre Amandine no buscaba cómo decirles a ambas mujeres que ella no estaba interesada en ninguno de esos campos más allá de un pasatiempo, pues su vocación se encontraba en otro lado.

Mientras tanto, desde el otro lado del salón en donde se hallaban las mujeres, el sonriente señor Valois negó con la cabeza, intentando aguantarse la risa. Un día antes de la visita de sus hermanas, Antoinette le había comunicado la decisión de perseguir su sueño como escritora.

On a morning in 1791, Antoinette was disoriented. On one hand, her aunt Laia explained to her the advantages of studying music; she assured her that she would be successful in that field given her ability to compose all kinds of melodies. On the other hand, her aunt Amandine told her that she would be more successful in painting, since she had seen that the young woman mastered the techniques that her father had taught her in her free time. Poor Amandine wasn't looking for a way to tell both women that she wasn't interested in any of those fields beyond a hobby, since her vocation lay elsewhere.

Meanwhile, from the other side of the room where the women were, the smiling Mr. Valois shook his head, trying to not laugh. The day before his sisters' visit, Antoinette had told him of the decision to pursue her dream as a writer.

Sobre la obra

Autorretrato, dudando entre las artes de la música y la pintura es una obra elaborada en 1791 por la pintora suiza Angelica Kauffman, una de las figuras más importantes del Neoclasicismo y una de las dos únicas pintoras que formó parte del grupo de fundadores de la Real Academia de Artes de Inglaterra. Actualmente la pintura está expuesta en el Nostell Priory, en Nostell, Inglaterra.

En el retrato vemos a una Angelica muy joven, dudando sobre su vocación. La mirada que el personaje central le dirige hacia la música da a entender que hubo un momento de su vida en el que consideró hacer de la música su modo de vida, dado que de pequeña había sido educada en idiomas, pintura y música, demostrando tener un talento nato tanto en estos últimos rubros.

On the artwork

Self-portrait, the Artist hesitating between the Arts of Music and Painting was an artwork made in 1791 by the Swiss painter Angelica Kauffman, one of the most important figures of Neoclassicism and one of the only two female painters who was part of the group of founders of the Royal Academy of Arts in England. The painting is currently on display at the Nostell Priory in Nostell, England.

In the portrait, we see very young Angelica doubting about her vocation. The glance that the main characters directs towards Music suggests that there was a moment in her life when she considered making music her way of life, given that, as a child, she had been educated in languages, painting and music, demonstrating that she had a born talent both in these last areas.
