Imaginarios: "Hombre ofreciendo dinero a una mujer joven", de Judith Leyster [ESP / ENG]

En una noche de verano, Juliana Janssen costuraba las orillas de un pequeño mantel bordado. A su lado, Lukas Van Der Vrie la observaba silenciosamente con una mezcla de deseo y lujuria.

La hacendosa Juliana lo había rechazado varias veces, y él insistía otras tantas, ofreciéndole los regalos más cuantiosos que sabía podría impresionar a una mujer de su posición. Sin embargo, Juliana no se inmutó ni ante la tela más rica; para sus ofrecimientos siempre tenía una respuesta que involucraba a todas las mujeres que han tenido amoríos con él, respuestas a su juicio impresionantes: ¿No es esa la tela que le ofreció a Karolina Meijer ayer? ¿No es ese el mismo collar que le regaló a Adelheid Mulder hace dos años? ¿Sabe su madre que estuvo liado con Claudia Van Tassen?...

Tras todas las respuestas recibidas, Lukas decidió recurrir a un último recurso.

"Te daré 300 florines si aceptas pasar una noche conmigo", dijo mientras extendía su mano con las monedas.

"¿No es esa la misma cantidad que le ofreció a todas las mujeres del condado?", le respondió Juliana, sin apartar la mirada de su costura.

"¿Es que acaso quieres más?"

Juliana se detuvo. Mirándolo con total indiferencia, le dijo: "¿Ha amado alguna vez, señor Van Der Vrie? Porque yo lo dudo. Siempre caprichoso, siempre obteniendo lo que quiere con dulces palabras y lujosos regalos. Cree que todas caeremos rendidas a sus pies nada más al ver el más bonito collar de perlas, el vestido más lujoso... Pero la realidad es que no todas caeremos rendidas ante un papanatas bueno para nada ni por todo el dinero del mundo".

Lukas se quedó callado. Juliana añadió: "Si me disculpa, señor, debo terminar esto para mañana. Buenas noches y hasta nunca".

In a summer night, Juliana Janssen was sewing the edges of a small embroidered tablecloth. Beside her, Lukas Van Der Vrie watched her silently with a mixture of desire and lust.

The industrious Juliana had refused him several times, and he insisted as many times, offering her the most substantial gifts that, he knew, could impress a woman of her position. However, Juliana didn't even flinch at the richest fabric; to his offers she always had an answer that involved all the women who had had affairs with him, answers that he found impressive: Isn't that the fabric he offered Karolina Meijer yesterday? Isn't that the same necklace you gave Adelheid Mulder two years ago? Does your mother know that you were involved with Claudia Van Tassen?...

After all the answers he received, Lukas decided to use a last resort.

"I give you 300 florins if you accept to spend a night with me", he said as he held out his hand with the coins.

"Isn't that the same amount you offered to all the women of the county?", Juliana replied, without looking away from her sewing.

"Would you want more?"

Juliana stopped. Looking at him with complete indifference, she said: "Have you ever loved, Mr. Van Der Vrie? Because I doubt it. Always capricious, always getting what you want with sweet words and lavish gifts. You think that all of us will fall at your feet at the sight of the prettiest pearl necklace, the most luxurious dress.... But the reality is that not all of us will fall for a good-for-nothing nincompoop for all the money in the world".

Lukas was silent. Juliana added, "If you'll excuse me, sir, I must finish this by tomorrow. Good night and goodbye".

Sobre la obra

Hombre ofreciendo dinero a una mujer joven (o La proposición) es una obra elaborada en 1631 por la pintora neerlandesa Judith Leyster, destacada artista del movimiento caravaggista durante el Siglo de Oro Neerlandés, conocida por sus trabajos de género o de escenas cotidianas. Actualmente se encuentra expuesta en el Mauritshuis, en La Haya, Países Bajos.

Esta obra es uno de los trabajos más notables de Leyster, y con mucha razón. Este cuadro en particular nos cuenta una historia que se desarrolla en un espacio íntimo, en el del hogar; a la luz de la vela, se revela en el rostro de la muchacha una mezcla de indiferencia y hartazgo ante una atención indeseable, representada por la actitud sospechosa del hombre del sombrero de piel, quien le ofrece dinero con una sonrisa. Ella está concentrada en su trabajo, ignorando por completo al individuo, quien con insistencia intenta captar su atención.

¿Cómo habrá terminado esa situación? Solo Leyster y los personajes del cuadro lo sabrán.

Man Offering Money To A Young Woman (or The Proposition) is an artwork made in 1631 by the Dutch painter Judith Leyster, a known artist of the Caravaggist movement during the Dutch Golden Age, known for her genre works or everyday scenes. It's currently exhibited at the Mauritshuis in The Hague, The Netherlands.

This artwork is one of the most notable masterpieces by Leyster, and with a lot of reason. This painting in particular tells us a story that develops in an intimate space, in the one of the home; at candlelight, it's revealed in the girl's gaze a mix of indifference and annoyance in reaction to an unwanted attention, represented by the suspicious attitude of the man in the fur hat, who offers her money with a smile. She's focused on her work, completely ignoring the individual, who insistently tries to get her attention.

How would have ended that situation? Only Leyster and the painting's character will know.
