Imaginarios: "Interior de la iglesia de San Pablo en Antwerp", de Henri De Braekeleer [ESP / ENG]

Marie Du Arcy contempló con compasión a una mujer y su hijo sentados a un lado del recipiente de agua bendita, en los amplios pasillos de la iglesia de San Pablo. Si por ella fuera, le ofrecería un trabajo en su casa, pero la realidad era que también estaba pasando por una crisis económica delicada. Recién había huido de casa en Bruselas, una decisión que ella se vio obligada a tomar luego de que su familia y sus amigos la instaran a quedarse con su esposo, un abogado con problemas de alcoholismo y de muy mal carácter.

No fue fácil para ella tomar dicha decisión; tuvo que pasar tres noches en vela para pensar bien qué hacer y a dónde ir de modo que nadie la encontrara, así como combatir en su fuero interno el miedo al juicio social del que sería objeto si se llegara a armar un escándalo. Al final, decidió que tendría que arriesgarse.

Con un suspiro, sacó de su pequeño monedero una moneda y se la entregó al niño; éste a su vez se lo entregó a su madre, quien le agradeció por aquél gesto noble.

Marie Du Arcy gazed compassionately at a woman and her child seated beside the holy water receptacle in the wide aisles of the Church of Saint Paul. If it were up to her, she would offer her a job at her house, but the reality was that she was also going through a delicate financial crisis. She had just run away from home in Brussels, a decision she was forced to make after her family and her friends urged her to stay with her husband, a lawyer with alcohol problems and a bad temper.

It wasn't easy for her to take such decision; she had to spend three sleepless nights to think carefully about what to do and where to go so that no one would find her, as well as to combat in her heart the fear of social judgment that she would be subjected to if a scandal broke out. In the end, she decided that she would have to take the risk.

With a sigh, she took a coin out of her little purse and handed it to the boy; he in turn gave it to his mother, who thanked him for that noble gesture.

Sobre la obra

Interior de la iglesia de San Pablo en Antwerp es una obra pictórica elaborada en 1875 por el pintor belga Henri De Braekeleer, miembro de una importante familia de pintores de Amberes y un importante exponente del realismo belga. Actualmente se encuentra expuesto en el Museo Real de Bellas Artes en Antwerp, Bélgica.

La pintura nos presenta una imagen cotidiana, tema recurrente en la mayoría de las obras de De Braekeleer. No se sabe a ciencia cierta en qué parte de la iglesia se encuentran las dos mujeres y el niño; posiblemente sean los anexos en donde se encuentra el despacho del sacerdote, a juzgar por la puerta semiabierta del lado derecho, junto a las escaleras. O quizás es una de las entradas laterales, a juzgar por el paisaje que se observa a través de los grandes ventanales exquisitamente detallados.

On the artwork

Interior of the Church of Saint Paul in Antwerp is a painting made in 1875 by the Belgian painter Henri De Braekeleer, member of an important family of painters from Amberes and an important exponent of Realism. It's currently exposed in The Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp, Belgium.

The painting presents us with an everyday image, a recurring theme in most of De Braekeleer's works. It's not known for sure in which part of the church the two women and the child are located; possibly they were the annexes where the priest's office is located, judging by the half-open door on the right side, next to the stairs. Or maybe it's one of the side entrances, judging by the scenery through the large, exquisitely detailed windows.
