The silence of god: an exploration of faith and belief with scorsese's silence

I watched silence last night, which is directed by martin scorsese, a legendary director. The movie is based on a novel which was based on true events. So you could say it was like a historical documentary, Iam already a big fan of him, I don't know how i missed to watch this film. I've already watched his films such as goodfellas, taxi driver, irishman, shutter island, the wolf of the wallstreet, etc.

Iam still surprised that i missed to watch this film before when i was watching his all other films. But this film is very peculiar when we look at other movies directed by martin scorsese, his other movies were most of the time were about crime and mobs. But this movie was thought provoking and makes us question oor belief. I never thought martin would direct this kind of movie. But nevertheless I really enjoyed this movie.

Silence released in 2016 is a cinematic masterpiece which explores our belief in god and the silence that accompanies it, this movie has both gripping narrative and extraordinary character development. This movie is based on a novel which is based on true events in 17th century which occurs in japan. The story follows two Christian priests, father Rodriguez which is played by andrew garfield and father garupe which is played by adam driver, who went on a quest to find thier mentor father ferriria which is played by liam neeson.

The setting of the movie is as follows, In the 17th century, japanese people who follows Christianity were hunted and hanged by feudal lords of the japan. father farreira somehow managed to escape from the hands of feudal lords and managed to spread Christianity in japan and that caused a lot of villages in japan to believe in Christianity. But it's been years since the head of church heard from father ferriria, and runour has it father ferreira dropped Christianity and he has a japanese wife and children in japan and serves the feudal lord of the japan.

Rodriguez and garupe don't believe the rumors and they are convinced that father ferreira is confined somewhere in japan and that they need to find and help him as soon as possible. So they ask the head of the church for the permission, this journey they are prepared to take have a lot of dark obstacles that they don't have any idea of it. But at the end they convince head of church to let them go to japan in search of father ferreira in hopes of they can help and bring the father back.

As story progress, both the protoganists are safely reached japan and they were warmly welcomed by people of nearby village who were practicing chirstianity. Both the fathers were astonished by how much belief the villagers had for christ. Because local lords of japan were very furious in eradicating Christianity from japan, and they wouldn't even spare children if they find out about the village.

But the local feudal lord called inoue sama somehow found out about the village and made a little field trip to village. At the same time other villagers who practice Christianity also heard about arrival of father Rodriguez and garupe, and were very curious to confess their sins. The reason this scenes takes place in the movie is very important, as they set the stage for the upcoming scenes in the movie. These scenes also makes us the audience relate to the civilians of the japan and makes us think about the freedom we have. This also makes father Rodriguez and garupe realize how much the people believe in god and that makes them question the existence of got itself.

To be exact, there were times where the inoue sama tortures the civilians who believe in Christianity and thus kill them at the end, there was this one guy who father Rodriguez have respect towards him, inoue sama makes him tied at the edge of coast so the ocean waves will keep thrash agains him but it took four days for him to leave this realm and reach heaven. During that time, father Rodriguez starts to question the existence of god, since he was taught that god will make us life harder to test us, but he never seen such extreme times, and the guy was never saved by god. The themes were very thought provoking. I don't want to spoil the movie, so I stopped with the setting and theme of the film, as the name suggests , the movie is very silent.

The character development Rodriguez go through is tremendous, we can really experience what kind of development he's gone through, since his choices are what the movie is heavily rely upon. He has to either give up his practices or his humanity, both the choices can change his life drastically.

But what i liked the most is the cinematography, we were brought right into the vintage japan with its natural beauty, and the music too. The music was very minimal and that really gone good with the theme of this film. If you really liked so far, I highly suggest you to watch the film it was truly a masterpiece.
