Sun Temple, Modhera - A Stepwell to visit

in hive-185836 •  4 years ago

A number of surviving stepwells can be found in India whether its south, North, East or West India. India has more than 2800 Stepwells at present. stepwells are dark and barely visible from the exterior. Stepwells are perfect example of architectural work by our ancestors although the civil engineering of big mammoth monuments was performed by mere hands or without any heavy machinery. Some of the stepwells are dry but still functional in the rainy seasons. Some of the significant stepwells are like
Birkha Bawari Jodhpur, Rani ki vav at Patan Gujarat, Agrasen ki Baoli New Delhi, Sree Peralassery Temple Kerala and so many. Out of so many stepwells in India I have visited around 3 or 4 but I liked the Sun Temple, Modhera more than any other stepwell.

It was built after 1026-27 CE during the reign of Bhima I of the Chaulukya dynasty. The temple is the Monument of National Importance and is maintained by the Archeological Survey of India (ASI). The temple is so well carved and the pillars are square or octagonal base to provide support to the roof and at the same time they are treat to watch. Some of the carvings leaves you speechless as it is still more visible and unmatchable.
The panels are decorated with Surya centrally which designates that the temple is devoted to Sun. In Hindu mythology Sun is considered the architect of the universe and the basis of all life. He is the ultimate soul who brings light and warmth to the world.

I would recommend to visit the place. I guarantee you will be amazed by the climate and scenic beauty.
