Most of us have a long laundry list of things we want in life.
That seems to be a natural part of being Human. Quite often, it's also what keeps us moving forward and motivates us.
Certainly, most people are grateful when they manage to accomplish one of their goals. Again, that's probably a natural part of being Human.
But how often do you remember to express your gratitude for the things that you already have? That is, do you remember to be grateful for the simple and ordinary things that go right for you every day?
I'm actually talking about the basics here! Do you remember to be grateful for your good health? Do you remember to be grateful for such a simple thing as just having a roof over your head?
That might sound silly, these are things most people take for granted.
You might be wondering why this is even important. After all these are things that are true for virtually all of the world and we sort of expect them.
As much as anything, this kind of gratitude is about simple mindfulness. It's about going through life and being aware of what is around us, and being awake to the fact that there are many many things - positive things - that happen for us all the time!
It also helps us create a general positive mindset as we go forward. When we have gratitude in our life, we become more likely to approach the challenges that face us from a positive perspective, rather than with anger, bitterness, or frustration.
It also gives us a sense of appreciation that makes it easier for us to deal with the inevitable setbacks that happens to everyone. Let's face it! Nobody goes through life unscathed!
Having a positive outlook and gratefulness makes it less likely that those setbacks are going to put us in a tailspin and then the next thing you know you're going to be sitting in my counseling office trying to figure out why you're suddenly hate everything, and what went wrong!
So take a few moments on a regular basis to just sit peacefully and express your gratitude for some of the simple things around you that are going right, and seem to go right every day. It'll help you in ways you hadn't even thought about!
