Meditation: Many of Us Know it Helps — so Why Don't We do it More?

”I know I need to meditate!”

A lot of people use that phrase, and yet a lot of people who say they "need to meditate" end up not meditating.

Whether it's the calm negative chatter in the mine, or perhaps to lower blood pressure, or perhaps just for relaxation there's little doubt that meditation is good for us, both mentally and physically.

I'll be the first to admit that it took me a number of years, and a number of ”false starts,” before I became a regular meditator.

Life can be a strange and wondrous thing sometimes! We often know perfectly well what we should be doing and what is the right action to take, and yet we are very reluctant to step up to the plate and follow through with the things that are good for our health.

So if we know it's good for us, why don't we do it more often?

From working with counseling clients, I know that lots of people are highly proficient at coming up with excuses for why they shouldn't do something. They're always ”too busy” or ”not ready to commit,” or afraid they're ”doing it wrong,” along with a host of other justifications that ultimately lead to no forward movement.

Of course that's not an issue specific to meditation. A lot of times we are simply particularly good at getting in our own way.

And even though meditation may be good for us it tends to feel like it's going to take us outside our regular comfort zones and so we're likely to resist.

Sometimes it feels like it is at the root of the human condition that we resist change that can actually improve our lives. That makes very little sense, does it?

So next time you notice the words ”I know I need to meditate” form in your mind, I challenge you to instead try to answer the question ”why am I NOT meditating?” When faced with challenges, simply being aware of where there is a blockage is usually the first step towards getting moving again!

Thanks for reading and Bright Blessings to all!

I believe we always try to find an excuse one of them that we are too busy. You are right we just need to try and do it and them see if that worked for us or not :)

I just find that I feel better and generally more awake and alerts when I make time to meditate on a regular basis. Ironically, those who often say they are "too busy" to meditate are often the people who could most benefit from doing so!

Thanks for stopping by @stef1, and for the Booming nomination!
