Old Habits: How People Resist Healing Their Hearts and Minds

Most people make a point of visiting their doctor at least once a year for a health check up. Doing so makes us "responsible" human beings.

At the same time, most people will go to great lengths to avoid making an appointment with a therapist to have a mental health check up. There seem to be all sorts of stigmas attached to mental health, and voluntarily going to a therapist to make sure that your mind and spirit is okay exposes you to the possibility of all kinds of cultural biases like your friends and family judging you and thinking you're crazy!

No such thing exists with a doctor of the body, only with a doctor of the mind.

The strange thing is that when even when people have voluntarily decided that they do want to go check in with a mental health professional, they are very resistant to suggestions offered that might lead to them to not only feeling better, but also healing potential psychological wounds that might be causing their lives to go in a different direction from what they want.

But why would we do such a thing?

People's resistance to psychological healing often tracks along the lines of an old truism that "the known Devil is often favored over the unknown Angel."

When we live in and keep repeating a pattern that might be somewhat toxic or damaging to our lives (and it causes us pain and suffering), we are often willing to stay with it because at least it is a known quantity.

It's like having a small pebble in your shoe and convincing yourself that your foot pain is nothing more; when it's a small pebble at least you know what's going on when your feet hurt. Removing the pebble from your shoe may cause you to no longer walk with a painful limp, but on the other hand you might discover that you have something far more sinister going on with your foot.

It is often thoughts like these that motivate and inform people's choices to be resistant to psychological help.

The second factor is typically also found in how we approach our physical health.

People so often want a "magic pill" solution to their problems. And much like holds true with physical health, psychological health often requires work and time and patience in order to get things to be better. There's no overnight Band-Aid that will make everything magically okay without doing the work.

Sadly, healing the mind and spirit can often be more painful than healing the body. People become resistant when they realize how much work it's actually going to be to get to a point where they truly feel better about themselves in their lives. Besides, it's easier to hide emotional pain than physical pain... people see that limp and start asking questions, while you can continue to keep your psychological wounds a secret.

But don't DO that! We have so much more potential for a happy and fulfilling life when we are not suffering, inwardly.

We just have to be willing to move past our old prejudices surrounding mental health. It's well worth the effort!

Thanks for coming to visit, and Bright Blessings to all!
