The Challenge of Finding Relaxation in a Non-Stop World

How often do we get a chance to just ”retreat?” To completely shut down the roaring chaos of our brains and totally decompress?

We live these extraordinarily busy and hectic lives, with many people actually working two jobs to make ends meet, and it seems like we hardly ever get to take breaks.

And when we do, we aren't necessarily fully relaxed because part of our mind is always slightly preoccupied with all the things we'll have to catch up with when we get back home.

Here in the US, the work ethic is such that we don't actually value holidays very highly and we're lucky if we get two weeks paid vacation a year.

Even though it is definitely not a psychologically and emotionally healthy way to live our lives, many of us are engaged in a slightly sick and twisted contest of ”who's working more.”

As such, it's probably not surprising that one of the most frequently encountered situations among my counselling clients seems to be people dealing with some form of burnout.

And even if they're not burned out in their actual work, they're burned out on life because their work takes so much out of them that there's very little left for simple enjoyment, hobbies, spending time with family and more.

Sometimes we manage to keep ourselves afloat emotionally by always looking to the future. We realize that working hard is something we'll only do for a specific number of years, after which we get to retire and start having some fun.

But is that really a good way to live life? Is it even a dependable expectation?

Not so long ago I had a client in her 60’s who had been looking forward to her retirement, but as the years had passed by it had become increasingly likely that she would not be able to retire, simply because her cost of living had gotten so high that she likely would have to keep working into her early 70s and maybe even beyond.

Small wonder that it is increasingly difficult for people to truly get a break.

Unfortunately, there is not much that I — as a counselor and a minister — can do to lighten the load of such situations.

The only words I can really offer that are of any help is to remind people that it's more the world that's broken not you, as the person struggling.

We have managed to create a society and life situation that is simply not healthy if you want to live a reasonably pleasant and balanced life. Take the small moments, when you can find them!

Thanks for visiting, and Bright Blessings to all!

I think the Faroe Islands...a destination I would like to visit, can still be classified as a refuge for contemplating nature and relaxing the mind. Nowadays, information is abundant, and it becomes difficult to find a place devoid of technologies that consume our energy and time! Cheers :)
