Hello everyone,
Today I thought of writing a review about a book that was in my mind since 2008. I was only 13 years old when I borrowed the book “To kill a mocking bird” which was written by “Haper Lee”. The book was recommended to read as the story gives a literature value. When I was thinking about what to post today, I suddenly got this book to my mind. I will briefly review the book inviting you too find and read the book if you have not read the book before.
Themes
The story talks about the life of Maycomb inhabitants. It also talks about racial issues in Alabama in several incidents. The courage despite gender is provoked by the character of Scout being a female. In the whole story the mothers of children are died. Fathers are also abusers except Atticus. So the effect of loss of mothers and abusive fathers also depicted as a theme of this story.
In the story there isn’t any mocking bird. But writer has used a mocking birds to express the quality of innocence. Loss of innocence is expressed by few rude characters in the story.
Main Characters
Jean Louise
Jeremy
Atticus
Scout
Radley
Review of the story
The story is a first person narration by a young girl. The story happens during the economic crisis in 1930 s in the City of Alabama in Maycomb country.
The main character Jean lives with her brother Jeremy and father Atticus who is a lawyer. Jeremy had two friends named Scout and Dill who played every day.
The children were excited about the neighbor house where a person called Radley lived without in connection with neighbors. The three friends were talking about him sometimes. They wanted to know the reason why this man is hiding and they wanted to take him out of his place.
When they were playing for more than two years they noticed that outside Radley’s house under a tree some lefts small presents for no reason.
The other incident is that Atticus was appointed to handle the case of Tom Robinson who is ordered to be lynched for raping a young girl. Many lawyers disagreed to work on this trial as Tom Robinson is a hard person in Maycomb.
On the day of Tom’s lynching three friends went to see that. After the death of Tom, his widow wanted to take revenge from Atticus. Jeremy and Scout were attacked by Tom’s widow while they were walking on a street one evening.
Suddenly someone came to rescue them. It was Radley who was living hidden inside a house for many years. He was the one who kept presents for children as well. Time to time he tried to show his love towards the children.
Conclusion
The story has a literature value that old English has been used to write the story. The story ironically talks about love, classes in the society and injustice. This story is not a pure autobiography but some incidents were taken from author’s real life. I invite you to keep this book in your reading list too.
