FAQs

1. Can my eyeball become white like that of a child?

This is one of the commonest questions you may come across if you live in most of the communities in Ghana as an optometrist. Many people get worried that as they are growing up their eye ball changes color and many a time end up trying to use so many drugs to make their eyes white again.

The straight answer to this question is that your eyeball will not become as white as when you were a child anymore. The reason been that as we eat and grow fats in our foods get deposited on our eye this adds to the color change of our eye and unfortunately this is inevitable.

Another reason why you eye ball changes color is the rubbing of the eye, when we do this for a long time limbal pigmentations may come, we also disrupt our vessels which adds up to the color changes. Again, vessels on your eye will not permit your eyes looking as white as snow.

Whiles there are drugs that can constrict your vessels and give an appearance of very white eyes this is not safe or healthy for the eye as long term usage will deprive the eye of oxygen and the necessary nutrients needed. And so let's understand that eye discoloration may be a normal process of the growth and such we shouldn't let it be a headache for us.

2. Why do i keep rubbing my eye?

Research has shown that allergic conjuctivitis is one of commonest diagnosis one would come across as an eyecare professional and simplest sign is itching. The reason why you may be rubbing your eyes will probably be about 99% an allergic reaction especially in you are living in an area with lots of dust in the atmosphere.

There is a simple solution to your problem if you keep rubbing your eye and we would recommend seeing your eyecare practitioner however here are some few things you could do to make things better for you or relieve your discomfort whiles you seek permanent solution from your optometrist at the nearest eye facility.

Wash your face often, it will help keep allergens away from the eye, keep your hands tidy and avoid touching your face and eye. When itching becomes extremely severe you may use cold compress to make things better. Try finding the cause of your allergen by observing yourself and the pattern of your itching, this would go a long way to providing a permanent solution.

3. Are Ocular conditions hereditary?

Just as many health conditions are hereditary and others ain't so does it apply to ocular health conditions too. Some few we can point out with support of research is refractive errors, myopia to be specific. Glaucoma also seems to be genetic the reason why your optometrist would want to see the rest of the family.

It is always best to talk to your optometrist or eye care practitioner when in doubt. It is the duty of your healthcare provider to keep you well informed of your condition and it is your right to ask for further delineations on anything you do not understand.

4. Why do i need to change my glasses or lens?

If you have a refractive error and has been given lenses to better your vision by your optometrist he or she may ask that you come back annually or bi-annually for review and a possible lens change. The reason been that as we grow our eye undergoes refractive changes especially with the crystalline lens in the eye.

Whiles some patients wouldn't have any changes coming up with their prescriptions others would and you may probably notice a change in vision with your glasses in about a year or two of usage. In addition, there tend to be scratches and dust accumulating on your lenses over the years and a change may be warranted in a year or two of usage.

Conclusion

As usual we would like our readers to know that this article seeks the purpose of education and shouldn't be used as an alternative to seeking professional council from your eye care practitioner. When in doubt ask.
