Itching eyes is one of the most common presenting complaints to the eye clinic, for 10 patients that a doctor sees within a day 9 out of the 10 would have atleast the discomfort of itching eyes. And so what can you do when this happens?

Causes of Itching Eyes

Every reaction that you receive from the eye is a response to something happening within your eyes, on your eyes or within your system. Which is what makes the eye a great diagnostic tool because it reacts to even the slightest of things in your system.

The major causes of itching eyes are allergens, when we say allergen we are referring to something that the body do not agree with and wouldn't want to have it in close proximity, or in contact at all. When this gets to the body it tries to tell us it doesn't like it by causing us to feel itchy.

This may be in so many different forms including simple dust, pollen, materials used to make certain house furniture, bedspread etc. The list goes on which makes it sometimes a bit difficult to identify what could really be causing your itch?

Here's what to do

It takes the effort of both the optometrist and the patient to identify the allergen and put a final stop to it. Rubbing eye can have lots of negative on the effect both short and long term and so it is not advisable to rub if it itches. Rather you can use cold water on the eye.

You can stack some ice cubes in a cloth and apply it gently to the eye and the itching discomfort should go down. If a foreign body had gotten to the eye and may be causing you itching wash the eye with copious water under running water.

After this is done, please report to your nearest eye clinic or eye center for immediate care. Please note that this is a first aid advise a not a treatment for itching eyes.
