Greetings to all and sundry,

We hope you are doing well and having a wonderful time. It is the beginning of another glorious week in the month of love and we are here once again to learn.

For our past few publications we have been discussing myopia and some of the theories surrounding it. Please if you missed any you may refer back to them to keep you up with our lessons, the links will be left at the end of today’s writeup.

For today we want to look at the theory surrounding the possibility of oxidative stress biomakers having any form of relation with myopia.

Oxidation and Myopia

We already know and understand that myopia is asa result of a mismatch between the refractive power of the eye and the axial length.

Now according to some of the researches it was found that in patients who had myopia or refractive error in addition some other conditions such as cataract etc their level of oxidation in the eye was quite high.

The focus was centered on the biomakers superoxide dismutase and malondialdehyde later on consideration was given to vitamin D which is also an antioxidant and then consideration was also given to vitamin c which is the most important antioxidant when it comes to the eye.

Now whiles there hasn’t been an extensive research on this and the field is still open to further investigation and possible post graduate research to be looked at, it can be extrapolated that the oxidative process may or may not disrupt the emmetropization process which in turn may also have a direct effect on the axial length and even the crystalline lens.

It must be noted that whiles most of the refractive errors are focused on the cornea power the lens has a role to play and antioxidants like vitamin c is critical to the crystalline lens clarity and other process. The accumulation of the lens fibers tend to alter is powe also the reason why nuclear cataract acts like a myopic case.

And so then it might be crucial that we keep our system free of radicals and oxidative stress, we should have more antioxidants in our system and live healthier because it might just save you the trouble of your myopia increasing, note that this is however a theory and not a conclusive research finding.

Conclusion

We hope you enjoyed today’s edition on the myopia theories debate and how possibly we can arrest this canker which is taking the world by storm.
