Today we want to have a discussion on ocular trauma and what you need to do for the betterment of your sight or your neighbor by advising based on the knowledge you gain from our lesson from today. We do hope you enjoy.

Ocular Trauma

When we say ocular trauma we basically talking about accident or force or injury to the eye which was not a s result of any medical intervention whatsoever. Thus if someone hits your eye it is ocular trauma, also should something pierce the eye it falls under the same category.

The only difference between these two will be that one would be called a blunt trauma whereas the other would be called a penetrating trauma or injury. Now it so happens that a lot of times patients neglect the blunt trauma and may not even make the effort to seek medical attention whereas for penetrating they do the needful.

It is understandable because whereas both may be considered ocular emergencies in the penetrating, blood as well as aqueous humor may be oozing out and it would scare the victim to want to seek immediate care and save the sight before hypotony sets in however it is recommended that we treat blunt trauma with the same zeal as the penetrating.

Why? Because in the case of blunt trauma whiles you may not see any blood or liquid coming out to scare you, inflammations could equally be going on which could start a uveitis case, it could result in what we call synechae where the iris get attached to either the lens or the cornea and could drastically reduce your vision too when inflammations ain't been taken cared of.

Aside these blunt trauma to the eye can also result in opacification of the lens resulting in cataract due to trauma, it could also dislocate the lens within the eye causing your vision to be compromised. It could increase the pressure within the eye which when not checked could bring about a case of glaucoma.

What you ought to do

And so don't think that because you do not see blood all is well, the first thing you need to do in the case of blunt trauma would be to get ice or cold water on to the eye to help with any inflammation that may have started and then head straight to the nearest eye clinic for thorough examination and the necessary precautions.
