Challenges are part of life. The onus is on us to persevere and turn those challenges into opportunities for learning something new.
Lily and I have been friends since childhood. We were neighbors at my family's old resident.
Lily lost her parents in a car accident on the Tema motorway in 2018, a few weeks before writing our West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). It was the toughest time of her life. She confided in me all the time and the constant crying and overthinking made her lose weight.
Lily and I two years ago; She wore black for almost a year or so
She went to stay with her uncle together with her little brother; James. James was in Primary five when the tragic incident occurred. The Uncle was God-sent at the moment. He provided almost all their needs until we were done with WASSCE. Fortunately for Lily, her father had made provisions for her to continue to University by opening a savings account for her. She needed the approval of her Uncle to access that money to go to school. The Uncle who was all nice and good become cold towards her and her brother. The Uncle demanded sex in exchange for sending her to school. This was so serious to the extent of forcing himself on her on several occasions. She couldn't go to school that year because of the circumstance she found herself in.
I made a promise to keep her secret when she told me about her uncle's behavior. In the end, I deliberately broke the promise by telling my father about it, and my father in order to believe my story called Lily over to our house. He sacked me out of the living room so that he could talk to her. When I came back she was in tears and was angry and grateful to me.
Sad though, but girls can actually confuse you sometimes.
My father was willing to help her only if she builds enough confidence to file a report against the Uncle. she took the bold step of reporting the uncle to DOVVSU at Tema community 1 together with my father and myself. She and the brother came to stay with us for like a month or so until her Aunty came for them.
Lily didn't allow her parent's death to affect our final exams. She had very good grades. As such, she was benefiting from the GNPC scholarship program for needy but brilliant students until her Aunty came for both her and her little brother. She was a student of the University Of Ghana Law faculty until she left the country with her Aunty and brother to South Africa.
I am really happy I didn't keep quiet and I am very happy Lily endured throughout all those hard days in her life. I do video calls with her and her brother once in a while and I am very happy she took the bold step of reporting her Uncle. She is currently in Law school at the University of Pretoria.
Thank you very much @awuahbenjamin for giving me the opportunity to share my best friend's story with us all and thanks guys for reading my post and don't forget to stay safe. Covid is still out there; remember to mask up.
Peace ✌✌

Life does really try to beat us down sometimes.
Loosing both parents at once is the worst form of punishment a teenager can receive.
Am glad your bestie was able to endure through all the hard times.
I wish her every form of happiness in this life.
