Today's lesson is a continuation of first aid for Bleeding. We will concentrate mainly on bleeding from specific areas of the body; specifically from the nose and the mouth and how to manage it.

BLEEDING FROM SPECIFIC PARTS

NOSE BLEEDING

This could occur when the blood vessels in the nostrils get damaged. This could be as a result of a blow, sneezing, or even picking one's nose.

First Aid for nose bleeding

  • Alert the victim of your assistance and calm him or her down

  • Sit the victim down or in a comfortable position

  • Tell the victim to bend the head down a little forward

  • Ask him or her to breath through the mouth

  • Pinch the nose just below the bridge firmly

  • Avoid unnecessary chatting with the victim

  • If you have ice around, you can apply it to the nose bridge

  • If the bleeding continues after about 10 -15 mins, seek medical attention immediately.

MOUTH BLEEDING

This could be as a result of a blow to the lips, tongue or as a result of teeth removal or gum infection.

First Aid

  • Calm the victim down
  • Apply direct pressure by putting a sizable pad at the spot
  • Avoid unnecessary conversations
  • If the bleeding persists, replace the pad and seek immediate medical help

NB; Let the medical officer know the number of replaced pads

  • Avoid hot drinks for like half a day, since that may enlarge the blood vessels and cause secondary bleeding

Thank you for following through with today's short but equally important session. I hope you have learned a lot.
The next lesson will be on INJURIES TO THE BODY ( BURNS AND SCALDS)
