Hii... I'm back with an update on the history of the ancient and medieval world and we will continue with the events that transpired with the Vikings invasion of France.
The emperor Charlemagne (ruled 800-814 CE) was the most powerful king in Europe at the beginning of the ninth century CE, ruling over a massive Carolingian Empire that covered much of France, Germany, the Netherlands, and northern Italy. His domains, however, were not immune to northern raids. Around 200 Danish longships stormed the coast of Frisia in 810 CE, demanding tribute. The Danes devastated the Frankish towns of Rouen, Chartres, and Tours in the 840s CE, and by the mid-ninth century CE, large swaths of France were practically under Danish control. In late 885 CE, a force of 30,000 Danes sailed up the Seine River in 700 longships to lay siege to Paris.
They were unable to take the city, though. After weeks of warfare and significant casualties on both sides, Charles the Fat (ruled 876-888 CE) came with soldiers and struck a settlement with the Danes. The Danes agreed to relieve the siege, sail farther interior, and assist Charles in suppressing a Burgundian insurrection in exchange for an amount of money and free passage out of the area.
The Vikings Attacked Paris (885 CE).
The Danish Vikings finally established permanently in northern France as a result of their recurrent attacks. Their commander, Rollo, negotiated to a covenant with the Frankish monarch, Charles the Simple, at the start of the 10th century CE (ruled 893-922 CE). Rollo agreed to pledge allegiance to Charles and to defend the region of Neustria (modern-day Normandy) on his behalf. In 911 CE, Rollo was made Duke of Normandy, and he consented to become a Christian.
His troops were all given land and a feudal society was established. The Normans then embarked on a period of expansionism that saw them claim the crown of England in 1066 CE and eventually establish their own empire in southern Italy and Sicily. Norman knights also played an important role in the First Crusade. In the First Crusade, Norman knights also played a significant part.
This is very nice story, we thank you for letting us know this great history about France. We are hoping to see more of these story. God bless you.
