From the era of pre-colonial days to the colonial days and now modern democratic days, the ideals and values of democracy has been with us and we seem to cherish it so much. Ghana is seen as the torch of liberation on the continent and despite years of military juntas, the country is still seen as the bastion of democracy on the continent. Ghana's democracy is globally hailed because it has stand the test of regimes and the people has the power to expressed their will through universal adult suffrage.
However, this democratic strides attain by Ghana is sinking and stinking where those in power rule according to their own whimsies. In every democratic governance, there's always the value aspect such as freedoms, periodic elections, rule of law etc. The institutions should serve as the drivers of these values has been rendered incapacitated and toothless. Corruption in Ghana is no more an issue that affects the rich and government officials because it has been normalized and never discussed. The moral fabric of democracy has degenerate and sink so low and stinking and bobbling waiting to burst. This burst would not only consume the heights attained by democracy, it would also serve as a precursor for the rise of authoritarian and despotic regimes.
Afrobarometer reports indicates that Ghanaian support for democracy has reduce and are beginning to complain of how stinking democracy has become and used as a caricature to scare the people to whom power emanates from. A stinking and sinking democracy is the one where a presiding judge has to run for her life because party vigilantes are not happy with the justice system. Again, a stinking and sinking democracy is the type where politicians that steals huge sums are parted on shoulders and rewarded for stealing while the pickpockets are jailed for their misdemeanor offence.

A stinking and sinking democracy is the one where its parliament has become nothing but a rubber stamp chamber. A stinking democracy is the one where there's consensus on salaries of politician but not the farming inputs of farmers. A stinking democracy is the one where the media is full of lapdog journalists who wags their tail at their pay masters and eat from their loots. They clergy that ought to use the podium to preach about the ills of the societies are now complicit themselves. Our rotten and sinking democracy needs to be looked at or else, its concomitant effects would consume us all.
Well content @ghanaba, you talk about the things a democratic countries possess such as freedom, periodic elections, rule of law etc. We are also enlighted on stinking and sinking democracy. Surely, democracy needs to be looked at.
