PNDC law 279 is the act the established the University for Development Studies. And as part of the act, the university is to adopt practical measures through research and outreach services so as to fulfil its mandate of blending the academic work with that of community which would help bridge the development gap and inequality in the three Northern Region.

In other to achieve this, students from the various faculties of the university are sent to live and work together in selected communities for seven weeks. The programme covers two phases engaging students from the first year through to the second year in a single community. The work of year two built on year one in a dynamic manner.
Students are introduced to the aspects of community studies in the first year of which both community entry and aspect of community diagnoses are practiced using participatory approaches. The problems and the potentials are analyzed during the first year and this served as the starting point of the activities for the second year whereby students together with the community are tasked to proposed interventions to the resolutions of the problems identified.
