One cannot deny the fact that modern technology has become an essential part of humanity's day to day living, from simple things such as light bulbs to complex ones such as computers and softwares that control almost all of the world's economy.

Indeed the world has grown accustomed and to a large extent, overly dependent on modern technology which pervades almost all aspects of living. One such aspect, is the advent of social media.

Social media, simply put, refers to online platforms that connect individuals and the masses, allowing them to transcend beyond time and space, and be able to communicate and share data/information with each other. And this can be accessed through the use of technological devices such as mobile phones, laptops, tablets and the likes.

There is no denying, social media in most ways has drastically improved man's way of living, with examples such as, the ordering of food and services from the comfort of one's own home, to the sharing of data/information across time and physical barriers, the creation of online businesses, as well as providing avenues for research. These are just a few of the numerous positive impacts that social media/technological devices have had on man, since it's inception.

However, the excessive use of social media/technological devices can become addictive and in most cases, be detrimental to the well being of the individual.

Some of the negative effects include; the distortion of a person's mental health which can lead to depression, anxiety, loneliness and low self esteem, which may result from being bullied or trolled by others on the platform or by comparing one's self with that of others on the same platform; eye problems as a result of straining and exposing the eyes to bright screens for longer periods of time; change in the overall body posture due to the prolonged assumption of incorrect body posture when using said technological devices; tendencies to distance one's self from society or from physical interactions with friends and loved ones; and in worst cases, getting scammed of one's money, possessions or vital and sensitive data/information.

In light of some of these negative side effects of the excessive use of social media/technological devices, it's therefore important for a person to regulate and control the time they spend on technological devices as well as online. Since doing so yields to their own well being and betterment.

The challenges of social media on the youth these days is enormous. Marriages and students are suffering when it should be rather helping us grow
