I remember speaking about mental illness last time. This time around I come your way with another troubling disorder which is known as panic attacks.

Panic attacks can be described as a sudden feeling of unease or fear that someone feels. This is mostly attributed to the way the human brain processes information. When a person experiences a panic attack, the person suddenly feels fear and sometimes if care is not taken the person might act differently from the normal. In Africa, there is a sudden belief that all these disorders and actions are not medical conditions. They are mostly attributed to superstitious beliefs and this hurts the individual because they are not able to get the right therapy to help their situation.

Panic attacks are normal medical conditions that can happen to anyone at any time, even though some people tend to develop it and have it often. Other people have it once in a lifetime due to the pressure they put on themselves when they are found wanting.

It has been said that of the two genders ( male and female), females are likely to experience panic attacks more than males. This can be attributed to the fact that women generally worry about situations more.
Whether male or female, a person of any age can have a panic attack. It is not like a heart attack where an old person is likely to get it.

We have looked at what panic attacks are, now let us look at the cause. We have started above that, the panic attack doesn't generally have a cause as it Is a disorder that is mostly attributed to fear and anxiety.

But certain situations can make someone more prone to having a session than other users.

  • When someone abuses drugs.

Half of the medical conditions in this world are mostly caused by the intake and abuse of drugs. Mental health conditions are sometimes not caused by the abuse of drugs but the more a user abuses drugs, the higher his or her chances of developing a medical condition. This is why a person who abused drugs is more likely to develop a panic attack than a person who doesn't abuse drugs.

  • Alcohol abuse

The intake of alcohol is not a problem but when a person starts to abuse it, it can become a problem as his or her brain will start to process things differently and he is more likely to develop a mental condition. A person who takes in alcohol is more likely to have a panic attack.

  • A person who has other mental health problems.

Someone who has had episodes of mental health cases like depression, anxiety and others is more likely to have a panic attack than someone who has never had any of these episodes.

After looking at the causes of a panic attack, let us look at the symptoms of panic attacks.

  • A racing heart.

This is the first thing a person should look at. When you are having a panic attack, it feels like you are about have a heart attack. When this happens the person is not at rest and he or she doesn't breathe normally.

  • The individual will be shaking it trembling.

When a person is feeling unrest or not at ease, he or she begins to panic. When you are being attacked by a panic attack, you notice that you begin to shake followed by episodes of trembling.

  • The patient begins to sweat.

A panic attack is all about the brain and what it is not used to. When someone is being attacked, you notice that he or she is not at ease and then he or she begins to sweat. It can be mild sweating or the person begins to sweat profusely because his heart is beginning to function abnormally.

  • The person suddenly feels scared.

The whole idea of a panic attack is that a person begins to feel like he or she is scared. So after feeling all the symptoms of a racing heart, sweating and shaking. It sums it up by you feeling scared of something happening to you.

  • Finding it difficult to breathe.

When you are being attacked, breathing becomes very difficult. This can be attributed to the abnormal beating of the heart hence the patient finding it hard to breathe.

We have looked at the panic attack, its causes and the symptoms. Now let us look at how we can prevent it.

  • We should learn to exercise regularly.

Exercising is one of the first therapy for preventing any type of illness or disorder. When we exercise we can be in shape hence we can prevent ourselves from being attacked.

  • Reduce the intake of drugs and alcohol.

We have started already that the excess or the abuse of drugs and alcohol is one of the causes of panic. One of the ways we can prevent ourselves from being attacked is to cut down on the alcohol and drugs intake to help our bodies function properly.

  • We should take time to rest and deal with stress.

Some people have a habit of overthinking. All these things are not healthy as they can cause our bodies to function abnormally. When we are faced with a situation we can't deal with we should seek second opinions or otherwise take time and rest and deal with the problems later. We shouldn't overburden ourselves with a problem.

This is all I have on panic attacks today and I hope from today we will be responsible for our bodies to help prevent these disorders.
