Our side of the fjord
Aalborg is one of the larger cities in Denmark. It has been deeply affected by the concret industry. Several factories were established in or around the city. It is the industry that is the reason for the growth of this city. The industrial break through happened in the 1890s. Within a few years Aalborg had five factories producing concrete. It's not only the chimneys we see today that bear witnes of the industry. In and around the city there are five chalk pits that used to provide the factory with components for the production. They are all closed now, but some are open to the public as recreational areas. Portland is still producing. They are known world wide for white and grey cements. They have developed a range of products like ready mix concrete. From a map I see that they are present in many countries on almost all continents.
Even though I have seen the smoke from the chimneys so many times, it has been from Aalborg. The factory looks different from this side. It was a nice, pleasant walk that turned out to be a little more than fifteen kilometres that day. A good day.
